I was debating between shark and elephant for my next purchase. I wish I knew how those materials were harvested though. Does anyone know where Lucchese gets its shark and elephant? I’m not against controlled elephant hunting.

Will probably get a pair of ostrich instead. The smooth ostrich is probably my favorite for that material.

Get the elephant. They'll be scarce soon. The hides come from African governments having to thin their herd.

To each his own, but I fricking hate square toe boots. That’s worse than the old cock roach killers all the posers used to sport during the Urban Cowboy craze.

Full quill Ostrich Ropers are my favorite boots I’ve ever had. Never felt the need for anything more exotic.

J toe or John Wayne toe. Full quill or shark, not leg. They will crack like the caiman. Btw I have leg that I wear on special occasions that are 1x toe and LOVE them. All that being said I love the look of caimans...and lizard which I also have and they crack too.

I was on the Lucchese page last night and was looking at the Gator (Not Caiman) boots. They're expensive, but really nice.

I've had ostrich and python for exotic leathers before and much prefer the ostrich. Better wear and I found them more comfortable.

I ride motorcycles a lot and if I didn't have a heel/toe shifter on my bike, the python boots would have never held up-----and they don't like to get wet either. I found the scales tended to have a bit of an upturn on the outer edges after they got wet and then dried.

What is the verdict on ropers vs cowboy?

I started with ropers and wore them for 10+ years. Now I find myself always buying cowboy boots. I like the extra bit of lift, makes me look 6'2".

Other than personal preference, is there any reason to go with one over the other?

The Ropers look great with Khakis and maybe slacks. The Cowboys of course with jeans. Just wear what you like IMO.

I have a pair of Tony Lama Caiman boots I love them. As with any exotic skin boots you have to keep them clean and apply conditioner four times a year.
