Last week Nate Duncan and Danny Leroux did their offseason grades for the Western Conference teams on the Dunc’d On NBA Podcast. I know a lot of posters are already listeners, but if you haven’t heard the episode, here is the idea and cliffs.

Each offseason Nate and Danny give each NBA team a grade for their offseason. For the most part, they are decently harsh graders. The grades are not just a “who did they get” but instead, they each grade based off of the offseason choices and decisions that were actually available to the specific team. For example, the Nuggets got a higher grade than the Clippers (I think B and B+ vs. C+ and B-) even though they made minimal moves because Nate and Danny took into consideration their tight cap space and limited ability to actually improve their roster.

Cliffs of what they said about the Pels:
Nate - A
+ Liked the AD trade, but loved the #4 trade and the Pels ability to not only dump Hill, but essentially turn his space into Redick
+ Thinks we got the best player in the #4 swap (NAW) and thinks there’s a strong possibility that NAW and Hayes are both better than Hunter
+ Likes the Favors trade, specifically that we now have his bird rights too.
+ Thought the Darius Miller signing was sneaky and creative cap maneuvering. Said the roster was already deep and was better to use his signing as a “human trade exception” especially since it cost us nothing. (To the chagrin of some posters here)
+- Neutral on the Melli signing. Hasn’t seen anything about him that is impressive but willing to give benefit of the doubt.
- The only knock he gave was that he wished that the Pels would have down more to put more shooting around Zion. Doesn’t like the lack for shooting from the 3-5 starters. Only thing keeping Pels from A+

Danny - A
+ A and never really questioned it. (Danny doesn’t believe in giving A+’s)
+ Parrots everything that Nate says
+ Loves all of the off the court upgrades with Griffin, Facilities, and Nelson all being huge pluses
+ Talks about the smart decision for the Pels to be competitive early because a complete tank would be hard with Jrue and the Lakers additions. (Both think Pels will be competitive next year)
- Wishes the Pels would have gotten more shooting from the forward positions, but doesn’t hold it against them too much because there wasn’t an obvious player for them to go after.

*Neither grade included drafting Zion since it was more lottery luck than decision making.
*Also, just as an aside, they think that one of Lonzo or Ingram will not be part of the future plans (Many here have said the same thing). In other pods, they’ve mentioned Ingram as the the more likely mover due to his pending free agency.

Overall, both had glowing reviews of the Pels offseason. If you’ve listened to any of their summer league episodes, this shouldnt surprise anyone as they’ve been praising the Pels all offseason. None of this is new information for anyone here, but I like to point it out because they said almost everything that we’ve said on here. It’s nice to reach outside the echo-chamber and to see affirmation of a lot of this boards opinions on the Pels offseason decisions. Also helps to know the national perception of the Pels is so positive.

If you have a chance, you should listen to the podcast and give it a follow (their Lakers offseason discussion in particular is interesting). I hate to cliff it and them not get any benefit. Both Nate and Danny do good work, specifically with analytics, cap rules, and how trades and signings affect future cap flexibility. Here is the link to the pod website if interested. Dunc’d On

If you want to break down what they did on draft night more like that:

Pelicans essentially traded:
Solomon Hill
Deandre Hunter
Jordan Bone
Alen Smailagic
And a future second round pick

For:
JJ Redick
NAW
Jaxson Hayes
Didi
Favors
Cleveland 2020 first (likely 2 seconds)

In the words of Eric Gordon, that’s “pretty good”

You arent wrong, but dont forget it was Anthony Davis we traded.

Edit: my reading comprehension is not on par today.

But AD was not part of the above trades. If you add AD to the "traded" you have to add Ball, Ingram, Hart and the future picks to the "for" category.

good podcast discussion i thought.

and since i'm bored, i was thinking what the roster might look like next year...

holiday/NAW/redick/ball/didi
zion/hayes/melli/hart
this assumes ball & hart get their options picked up.

pels have a 1st & three 2nds.
bird rights on favors & moore.
RFA rights on jackson, ingram & kenrich.

i think they'll make a mid-season decision on ingram, go after a shooting forward in trades, punt on FJ & moore, and re-sign favors with bird

I'm with you completely. I think that Ingram is a very good player, but I'm not sure how good of a fit he'll be in Gentry's system. If the opportunity presents itself close to the trade deadline, I see us packaging him, Miller, Moore, and a pick for a top wing who can really shoot. We then make a run and actually win a playoff series.

I know that some of you love Ingram's game and think I'm nuts -- and that's OK.

I’m not the biggest Ingram fan either. It’s not just fit with the system, but some of his analytic numbers and projections are not the best. But with his measurables and flashes, he is someone that they were absolutely right to take a flier on. He is by far the biggest question mark for this team next year in my eyes, and the Pels won’t have much time to make a decision on him. I really wish he had one more year till his free agency

I think the Hornets offer Ingram the max this offseason.

They have all the bad contracts expiring except Batum, and no real young talent.

He's from N Carolina and went to duke. Tough decision for Griffin coming on Ingram

To me the key is how well he defends. Look at Wiggins, he's become an albatross because he's seen as a one dimensional player. Barnes and Porter Jr. on the other hand had quite a bit of interest even on inflated contracts because multi-dimensional wings are at a premium in this league.

With the Pels focus on defense and Ingram only needing to be the 4th or 5th best defender much of the time, I think his defensive advanced stats are going to look pretty decent. If we end up paying him I don't think he'll be an albatross like Wiggins. I think he'd be a lot more moveable like Porter and Barnes if we later decide he isn't the guy.

I'm super high on Ingram. I'm thinking he balls out this year and we'll be happy to pay him

Not that it will really matter but they'll have that abysmal rozier contract still

The only thing I’m worried about is someone paying him in the weak FA class he will be joining. The only advantage we have is that there isn’t a ton of space available and that he’s restricted. I’ve seen some places rank him as the 3rd best FA next year behind Davis (who isn’t leaving LA) and Siakam (who is also restricted). That’s pretty wild honestly, but it’s absolutely foreseeable that he gets a large offer thrown at him if he shows promise and growth away from the LAL dysfunction

he will get a big offer even if he doesn’t show improvement.
so the pels know he is getting paid by somebody, they’ll need to decide mid year whether that somebody is them or not

losing him to an offer sheet is better than overpaying however it’s not ideal when he could have been traded for something you like better. He has value now and he will have value in February. Best case is the pels decide to pay him and are happy to do it

If you’re choosing between Ingram and Lonzo, I feel like it has to be Ingram if you look at it from a team construction stand point. Especially if NAW plays well this year. Wings are just harder to find than PG’s (especially non-scoring PG’s).

Lonzo has a third year option they can pick up. He’s here next year unless they decide they don’t want him to be. He has nothing to do with the Ingram decision

the choice will be between Ingram and Ingram’s salary slot
