As the Mets Turn: Mickey Callaway and Jason Vargas had an altercation with a beat writer

The Mets have apologized to Newsday’s Tim Healey for Sunday’s postgame clubhouse incident at Wrigley Field, where Jason Vargas physically threatened Healey and manager Mickey Callaway told the team’s PR staff to remove the reporter during an obscenity-laced tirade.
quote:
Callaway and Vargas took issue with Healey only minutes apart after the Mets’ 5-3 loss to the Cubs, who rallied to win on Javier Baez’s three-run homer off Seth Lugo in the eighth inning. With the team’s bullpen troubles a season-long concern, Callaway was peppered with questions from reporters regarding the decision to stick with Lugo rather than use closer Edwin Diaz earlier than the ninth, and after the testy exchange wrapped up, Healey headed to the main part of the clubhouse with the other reporters.
“Mickey came out of his office, dressed, and I thought he was leaving for the day, so I said, ‘See you tomorrow, Mickey,’ ” Healey said. “And then he said, ‘Don’t be a smart-arse.”
Healey said he was told by other reporters that Callaway continued to curse at him. Healey said he did not hear that because he was “10 feet away at that point.”
Healey said Callaway then went into another room, and when the manager returned after a few minutes, he picked up where he left off.
“I couldn’t confidently tell you exactly what he said, but he said, ‘You know we’re going to be in a bad mood after a loss,’ or something like that. And I tried to tell him, I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just saying I’ll see you tomorrow. And then he said, ‘Get this guy out of here,’ and that got the attention of Jason Vargas.”
According to Healey, Vargas was getting dressed at his locker, which was about 15 feet away in the cramped visitors’ clubhouse, and Healey noticed the pitcher had been staring at him for what seemed like roughly 45 seconds. Healey said he was just standing there, “wondering why Mickey was blowing up,” when he saw Vargas. He recalled asking him if everything was OK or if there was something he wanted to say.
That’s when Vargas threatened him.
“He said, ‘I’ll knock you out right here’ and then took a couple of steps toward me,” Healey said. “Some people said charged — charged is super-strong.”
Mets media relations manager Ethan Wilson got between Healey and Vargas while other players, Noah Syndergaard and Carlos Gomez among them, moved in to make sure the pitcher remained at a distance. Healey said he walked away at that stage.
“I was shocked, and at the same time trying to tell Vargas or Callaway or Ethan, ‘Hey, I didn’t mean anything by it,’ which might have been interpreted as aggression on my part. I was in no way trying to be aggressive or antagonistic or anything. At that point in the day, I want to talk to Diaz and then leave, you know?
“What’s the point in me trying to pick a fight?”

That’s one side of the story. Mickey has been a disaster in NY. I’d take him back as a coach in Cleveland.
I’m wondering if the Mets have their own side.

Vargas and Callaway were looking for a scapegoat for their anger and found one. They should be soundly punished.
But let’s not act like Healy is all innocent here. He’s probably had some sarcastic comments at inappropriate times and probably said something under his breath about the gruff attitude by the postgame interviews. I used to be a journalist. I know whenever you get a gruff comment back it’s sort of shocking, they treat you like you’re stupid and you say something under your breath knowing they’re likely not paying you any attention. That’s likely what truly happened. Healy made a shithead comment, that would normally just be blown off, if heard at all, but not this time.
Hasn’t there been some trouble with Newsday recently anyway? Haven’t the Knicks barred them from coming to their facilities or something?

Twitter is saying there is some speculation by others in baseball that Callaway is trying to get fired.

All he said was...See you tomorrow coach.
Hopefully Callaway is gone today, he is a disaster. Pretty much the only thing keeping me interested at the moment is Pete Alonso.

All he needs to do is just keep doing what he has been doing and he wont have to worry, it will happen. No need to do this.

I’m a life long Mets fan so I’m used to losing a lot more than winning. I think Mickey is a good coach but it’s just not working out.

A good coach, ok, but he is not a good manager.

Without question he left Lugo in too long yesterday. I'm a Cub fan and I'm glad he did. He should have removed before Rizzo, much less let him pitch to Baez.

and he had the balls to say this yesterday
"We have a very good plan. We know what we are doing."
this was pulled from a Mets message board
April: 4 blown saves (14% of games)
May: 8 blown saves (29% of games)
June: 5 blown saves (24% of games)
No need for a change of strategy.

With the exception of Bud Black, why does it seem like every pitching coach who becomes a manager is absolutely terrible?
Posted on 6/24/19 at 7:58 am to Bench McElroy
Idk but not only is he a shite manager but our pitching has also gotten way worse on his watch.

Alonso is the only player I am paying attention to
Between Cespedes and cano I hate this team and the manager isn’t helping

Jeff McNeil is hitting .342 with a .900 OPS. You should pay attention to him. I'd probably pay attention to Michael Conforto as well.

I just want to keep Alonso, McNeil, Conforto and deGrom. Get rid of everyone else and start over. Wish we could get rid of the Coupons.
