Can the Lakers still back out of the trade?

It seems Pelinka screwed up big time with seemingly small details. No way the Pelicans help the Lakers add cap space just to be nice. I’m still in shock that the Lakers gave up their entire future for AD. What happens if AD has a change of heart and refuses to sign an extension with the Lakers? With AD’s injury history, it seems foolish to give up everything on that gamble.

I mean I guess they could, but they won’t.

Are they going to tell AD they changed their mind?

Would be a shitstorm to deal with between angry fans and disgruntled players who thought they’ve been traded

Backing out of this trade would probably be more devastating to the Lakers than going through with it as-is.

Having a star locked down but backing out because you screwed up the order of operations just make you look like a bunch of jackoffs.

Laker fans would never let Pelinka hear the end of it and LeBron would probably force his way out due to them screwing up the acquisition.

I feel like the rest of the league would blackball them for reneging on the trade. Would have a hard time making trades in the future

Edit: id imagine this is why exact details of the trade get leaked so that a team can’t try to make changes before the official date

The more I look at this trade, the worse it looks for the Lakers. It looks like the Boston/Brooklyn trade massacre all over again. The Pels new players and all the draft picks they received could end up being bad. But the Lakers have given up their entire future for a short term window of an aging Lebron and injury prone AD.

Laker fans are trying to tell themselves it isn't the Nets trade because AD is still young and they will have a championship window.

Except their supporting roster is currently Kuzma, Wagner, and Bonga, they are basically guaranteed to have bad 1sts or no firsts for years, and they don't have many 2nds left because they already traded those.

They are banking heavily on a drunk who missed 30 games last season with a torn groin and a player whose nickname is "Mr. Glass".

It would set that organization back longer than the amount of time we have their picks. LeBron would ask to be traded and the organization struggles to sign notable free agents in the near future.

Showing up at tip off while drinking when you are injured is not a good look.

I did a quick tour of Lakers' fan forums and the fans are generally excited about the trade. They are optimistic another big name is going to sign with the LAL.

Journalists seem to realize the problems with the deal:

Lakers' situation

Also, a fair number of Lakers' fans are rooting for the Pelicans because they appreciate the guys they have lost in the deal. I didn't notice any Pels hatred?
