Neighbor is selling a '92 Yamaha waverunner 3. $500 with the trailer (good shape new tires). He bought it to fix it up and it's just been sitting around so he's getting rid of it. Motor turns over. Carb is out and sitting in pieces in a box with a rebuild kit. I've rebuilt carbs and two stroke motors so I'm not too scared there. Buy I've never owned a jet ski. Hull looks sound and impellor looks good but the vanes of the stator part of the jet jump looks heavily chipped. We have a lake house so this could be something that would get weekly use in the summer. Is something this old worth getting running for cheap or will it turn into a big pita on the Long haul?

I don't like tinkering with engines, so it would be a headache for me personally. I think you are gonna spend a lot of time keeping this one working. but for $500 with the trailer, get it for that alone and you have a project for the summer. when it craps out, still got the trailer.

If it has good compression, minimum 100 psi each cylinder and only less than 10% between cylinders, I'd play with it. Old YAMAHA skis are pretty reliable. I have a 1996 Waveraider 1100. It's fun and has way less complicated features than newer skis of today. If you've rebuilt 2 cycle engines, these aren't much different. In fact, unlike an outboard, motorcycle, or a car, there is no water pump. The "jet" forces water through the engine. In some ways they can be simpler than what you might be used to

5500 and I'll sell you a 2012 vxr with new battery, plugs, and air filter, aluminium trailer.

Runs like a top and can tow tubes with three riders. The 1.8 is a horse

Well what the hell. It's just $500. I'll get most of my money back in the trailer if it doesn't work out.

If it has a registration you will. That would make the decision for me. Look at it as buying a trailer with a free ski, but a trailer with no paperwork is scrap.

Boat trailers aren't registered in Alabama.

Since I can tow a tube with it I imagine I'll use it quite a bit so I don't have to pull out the pontoon or ski boat when the kids bug me to tubing.

Remember...you will only be able to put one kid on the tube at a time...Jet ski is a 3 seater you(legally) need an observer...that's 2 and then the one on the tube(3) counts as a passenger that may have to board the ski

Coast Guard and Wildlife & Fisheries will nail(tax) you for overlooking that.

I have one of those. Bought it for pennies on the dollar in 1993 after it was T boned by another jet ski. Fixed the fiberglass and it's been pretty much bullet proof. Over 25 years I have cleaned the carb a few times and how ever many batteries. The thing won't die and it has been abused. I have a shop manual if need some specs for setting the carb. It's kinda slow like 35 mph max.

Probably the only part that needs replacement in the carb is the rubber pump diaphragm. The aftermarket ones are junk. Buy OEM Yamaha/Mikuni

Ebay

Check to see if it has spark. The dead man/kill switch will corrode on those older models killing the spark even if you have the key thing holding up the switch. Unplug the white/black wire going to the kill switch and check for spark again. If you have spark the kill switch is the problem.

Tell him you'll get it out of his yard for free. You don't want to pay someone to raise your blood pressure

If it has good compression and spark. I would offer what the trailer is worth $250-300. A 27 year old non running jet ski is not worth much. If you don't have all the parts for the carb. A used Mikuni SBN44 carb will cost $75-150

Rebuilt the carb. Re-plumbed all the flue lines. pulled the gas tank out and cleaned it out real good. pulled the oil pump and oil reservoir. Replaced a couple of parts on the jet drive. I did find out it had a nice aftermarket Solas stainless steel prop on it. Prop is probably worth more than the rest of the PWC Peels off all the vinyl and did a quick rattle can paint job to get rid of the crimson. As I was adjusting the high speed adjuster and checking the plugs one of the spark plug boots broke. Ordered a couple of new spark plug boots and we'll see if I can get the carb finished adjusting next weekend.
