What is boat insurance?

I know, right? I bought my boat with cash, and self insure it. I take care of it and don't do stupid things in it. I love fishing for food, but I don't need $8k to do it. Heck, I catch most of my fish running yo-yo's from a $100 pirogue...
I don't really get tournament fishing, but I understand people have different taste.

I used Allstate since my Home and auto are with them. I had liability only as premiums were too high for covering anything mechanical

this. he will get you the right policy not just the cheapest.
mine is not that cheap for the price of my boat, but for not filing any claims the last few years my deductible is down to 125 and that would cover the price of the entire boat if need be.

Mine is a rider on my homeowners. Cost about $15-$20/month. Liberty Mutual

I've had State Farm for 27 years and they have been great to me. Never hesitated to pay on a claim. I submit an estimate and they write a check.

I just have liability through State Farm. Super cheap.
Unless you have a yacht or a 100k boat then full coverage boat insurance is a waste of money in my opinion. I carried it for awhile and tried to use it once. I hit a stump going 20 mph and it broke off the skeg on my outboard motor. Quoted a price of $1,400 to fix it. I called State Farm and they said my deductiable was $2,000. I said ok, well this almost takes care of my deductible for the year and they told me the deductible amount starts over every month. Are you kidding me! Also, they said hitting underwater objects is not covered anyway. What a complete waste of money. I dropped the policy the next week.

I had the opposite experience with State Farm here. My deductible is 500.00 and when I hit a log I showed them a 7000.00 estimate for new lower unit, prop, and low water pickup installation. They cut me a check for 6500.00 and sent me on my way.

My experience with State Farm was great too. Foolishly left my boat stored in Rockport for Harvey. Boat storage facility was blown away. Found my boat, still on the trailer about 200 yards away. Boat was submerged with significant damage. New motor and damage repaired. State Farm didn't haggle. Just said get receipts and we'll pay the claim.

American Reliable Insurance Company, was set up with them through the boat dealer.
The replaced my lower unit and paid 100% of a tow I had with no issues. 2 claims in 2 years, will be interested to see what happens to my rates next year.
So $6k of claims and $2,500 out of pocket for policy and deductibles. I’m in the green, so to speak.

Just paid my premium for the year a couple days ago, $307.
I did the same exact thing with Progressive this year. Heard a knocking in lower unit, brought it in. When they tore it down, gears were cracked and metal was everywhere. No problem, still have warranty. Yamaha denies warranty claim saying it is from impact. Don't ever remember hitting anything significant. That'll be $3,800 dollars sir.
Hey there Flo...I need to make a claim. New lower unit housing, shafts, gears, prop, water pump. Paid Southern Outdoors $494 ($500 deductible) out of pocket, Progressive sent them the check for the difference.
