Reasons for Pickford not going into the box on that last kick?

I'm still confused why he didn't get a straight red for taking out Mandzukic with a knee-high, studs up challenge

Yeah it probably wouldn’t have made a difference but why didn’t he come up. No reason. Stupid.

That's why I am laughing at people lauding his play there. It was dirty as hell to go studs up. He's lucky he didn't destroy the guys knee.

He's the keeper. His intention was to make the save by any means necessary.

He did an extremely poor job on the winning goal too

It's not like you're bringing in another 6'5" guy into the box with Pickford.

I thought he would go up, but I'm guessing they may have thought there was a slight chance that the extra time went more than 4 minutes with all of the stoppages.

No, but you were already down a man anyway, at least get another body in there to draw a marker.

That's stupid considering they were trailing regardless.

Croatia uses zone to defend set pieces. Pickford wouldn't have done much other than get in the way of an actual threat.

I don’t know why they didn’t have Pickford take the free kick himself and send the other nine players forward. That was their last chance. Croatia scoring on an empty net wouldn’t have changed the outcome, so England might has well have given themselves the best chance to score.

I need to go back and watch it again, but I could've sworn they were man marking on that last kick. Regardless, you need another body in there. Even if he is just standing at the top of the 18 to clean up a rebound.

He's useless being in his own goal at that point.

The thing about him is he's only 6'1 so being in the box doesn't do much good.

I agree he should have been up there somewhere to pick up scraps though.

As a casual soccer fan, Pickford won me over more than any other player this World Cup

Why is he lucky?

Like he'd get sued or something?

It's in the field of play and a normal part of the game.

You can't be sued personally if you tear up somebody's knee on a play...so why would he care?
