Because no one thought he would be that good. The same reason he wasn't in any other uniform better than South Alabama. South Alabama was his best offer.

He wanted to play every day, and most teams wanted him to pitch out of the pen.

USA gave him his wish.

Because LSU was among a lot of schools that were unable to project him as a major college player, a great kid that took coaching and worked hard to make himself in a first round draft choice.
South Alabama was the only school to see that potential and was rewarded with him signing and leading them to a pair of NCAA regionals.

A better question is how Denham Springs couldn't get past the 2nd round of the playoffs with him, a 5th round pitcher, and multiple players that played college ball.

They have had a large number of players play college ball over the last 10 years or so, but never a deep run in the playoffs. There is only 1 common denominator.

Carrol isn’t the best. Denham has great ball players and can never win in the playoffs.

SEC recruiting favors the early development kids, Travis was a late bloomer who went to USA and developed his game. USA is legit, they are building something special over there!

They played together for just one season I believe and lost in either the semis or the finals.

Back then it was one L and done. Not like it is now. Any team can lose a game on the wrong day.

Everyone missed on this guy, wasnt just us. It happens. Look at Kahlil Mack he went to buffalo, some people just fall through the cracks in all sports.

Baseball is a hard sport to project how a player will develop, that's why the smaller schools offered him and not the big name ones, he wasnt jumping off the charts out of high school. Stuff like this happens all the time.

Carrol did say teams were missing the boat on Swaggerty several years ago. Good kid, hard worker, with a lot of talent.

Compare the players LSU signed that year kid with this and he was equal or better. Teams jump on kids early and guys who come on later get passed over.

The kid had a good arm, ran well and hit well with power. Batted left handed.

I will add that sometimes at a USA or even a Texas your roster can carry 2-3 players that you are waiting to develop that will play hard and bat .200 with 2 HRs.

Not so much in the SEC. hard to go through a lineup 2-3 times and give up 5-7 outs in a game facing 1st round talent pitchers. Sometimes 2 out of 3 SEC games.
