Traveling to Australia...how did you deal with the time/jet lag issues?

I was pondering a trip to Australia sometime in the future and looking at flights and all that.
Flight leaves on Saturday night...and get's there on Monday morning (my mind is full of frick with the international date line and all that).
Did it really frick you up when you went missing an entire day?

You'll be tired the first day or two. The key is to power through and not nap during the day. Definitely sleep on the plane if you can.

I've never been to Australia, but have had itineraries (30+hrs) like that to several places in East Asia. Just do whatever you can to stay up that Monday and not go to bed until at least later that afternoon. Obviously, it can be hard to sleep on a plane for some, me included. I just drink enough caffeine to almost kill myself when I get there and then sleep HARD that first night. I'll still end up waking up way earlier than normal, etc, but it's not terrible.

Personally, I've done way better flying to India and then Thailand than I did flying to Spain.
The total 12 hour flip just works for me. Not sleeping at your destination until it's time for bed (no earlier than 8pm or so) is the best strategy.

Sleep all you can on the flight over and stay up as long as you can on Monday. When I went, I crashed around 5-6pm that day and then was fine the next day. Helps if you can fly business class or better for such a long flight...

Flew to Thailand last year. My pointers for you would be:
1. Do a full day up to your departure flight. Work and exercise if possible. Stay hydrated and for me avoiding alcohol helps. Instead i take half a xanax to kill the jitters and relax.
2. Find a way to sleep on the plane. (Step 1 will help)
3. When you get there, go until you crash.
4. If you have trouble falling asleep your first night or two don't just lay in bed and worry about sleep, get up and go do something and try sleep again a short while later.

When my four siblings and I were kids, my parents took us to Australia. We arrived in the morning after 21 hours of travel. The first evening, we attended an opera at the famous opera house in Sydney. We all got great naps in to help with the jet lag.

I had no issues with jet lag last month when I got to Asia. And this includes staying awake my entire 14 hour flight from LAX to PVG and my 4 hour flight from PVG to PNH. But when I got home 3.5 weeks later, for whatever reason, I had jet lag for about 4 days. And this is with very little nap time on flights. I had no appetite, felt nauseous at times and couldn’t get adequate sleep for about a week. But I stayed off any meds and just endured it and it eventually just went away...

Funny, I am the same way. I used to fly 200-300k a year for a while, and going to Asia, India, etc never bothered me. Fly to Germany, and I was a wreck for days on end. The whole 5-7 hours of Europe never set well with me.
But like others have said, either land at night, or when you get in, sign up for a few things that force you to stay awake.

I've been to East Asia several times (14 hour time difference) and I found out that the fastest way to overcome jet lag is to get drunk on the first few nights. Hope it helps.

Went to NZ through Sydney. The flight there wasn't too bad. Watched the LOR trilogy and napped a little. The first day in NZ was hazy so we didn't drive anywhere.

Yeah, I've done Australia and New Zealand several times and didn't have much trouble. Europe has been more difficult for me. My theory is that at some point the body just gives up and reboots the internal clock.
As yes - stay up when you get there until the normal sleep time. Same goes for any travel.
