They knew, it was a combine thing. They also did an exit/end of season physical which showed nothing. They also did one the year prior when they signed him and it all cleared.

From what it sounds like, it wasn't until his June checkup that team and their cards guy found something unusual which prompted him to go to his personal cardiologist and a 3rd cardiologist as well.

When it comes to Ortho-business, yeah I can definitely not give them the benefit considering the recent issues (Breaux, Byrd, Spiller)

There were two with conflicting reports last year, one that said his personal caught it when he went for his annual checkup, saints confirmed, and he sought a 3rd opinion. Another was Saints caught it on physical, he checked with his cardiologist who also looked, and then he sought a 3rd opinion.

There were 2 physicians who said its career ending and 1 who did not.

Either way, while I feel and agree that teams should perform the physical right before they sign a contract, its not uncommon practice in the NFL or professional sports to not have one done the same day.

The assumption is that the condition that wasn't found in January on his exit physicial, but was found in June would have been picked up in March. That isn't always the case either, he had a structural issue that was known, for it to suddenly become career ending points to an acute change or an new arrhythmia. Neither of which is a guarantee to show in March. Hell, might not have shown in May either.

We don't know the whole story, for all we know he might have been complaining of chest pain that day after working out and decided to get checked.


I've called for the medical and training staff's heads often the past 3 years when it came to Byrd, Spiller, and Breaux. A joint problem, degenerative hip, etc those are ortho issues compared to a cardiac issue. One is likely to be found at any point in time, the other is definitely not.

As someone that has had a heart arrhythmia,

a physical is nothing like a thorough check up by a cardiologist. Given his condition coming out of college he should have been given an advanced checkup by a cardiologist before he was given money.

Maybe it just did “pop up”. Guy has a history of heart issues, more than likely it was pre existing. He signed in March and missed OTA’s in May. This was discovered sometime in between.

I just don't see how we don't get more salary cap relief from this. He isn't "injured" playing further could actually kill him. Seems like the NFL could pass rules calling for teams to pay players with situations like this but have it not count against the salary cap.
