Why is the B10 so lopsided in their divisions?

Iowa and Purdue the only 2 at a shot for bowl eligibility. The 4 best teams in one division. Did they set it up that way on purpose?

Thoughts?

The Big 10 needs to move one of Michigan/Ohio state/Penn State to the other division to even things out

I remember that. The other conferences with divisions at least have some semblance of equality...

They won't have divisions with the arrival of USC and UCLA.

Fun unrelated fact:

When the ACC went to divisions, they deliberately rigged their divisions so that Miami and Florida State were in different divisions so they’d meet every year in the ACCCG. Imagine the eyeballs and revenues!

To this day, Miami and Florida State have never met in the ACCCG.

I dont think Miami has ever won the division, right?

They’ll never put OSU and Michigan in different divisions. That would dilute the final game of the year.

It really wasn’t an issue a long long time because Wisconsin was a consistent top 10 program.

And Michigan outside of 2006 hasn’t really been relevant in the BCS/playoff picture until last year.

When they had divisions named legends and leaders it was more balanced but they got criticized for the names.

Weird take since OSU and Michigan used to be in opposite divisions. They dreamed of having those two meet in the CCG each year. Michigan never won their division though.

They did in 2017 but got predictably stomped by Clemson in the ACCCG.

I think they only had three years of that setup, though. Playing OSU in consecutive weeks would be miserable.

get rid of the divisions, top two teams play each other in the championship or no championship at all, just crown regular season champs. This may be better when we go to 12 team playoff.

Pods could be interesting:

South?
OSU
Penn St.
Indiana
Purdue

North?
Michigan
MSU
Wisconsin
Minnesota

East?
USC
UCLA
Rutgers
Maryland

West?
Iowa
Nebraska
Northwestern
Illinois

9 game schedule

Your pod (3)
Plus
Two teams the other three pods (6) rotated

Or

Your pod (3)
Plus
A permanent divisional pod (4)
- East /West for travel considerations
(NY / DC / Chicago are easier from LA)
- North /South = Michigan and OSU yearly
Plus
Two “rotational“ pods where you play one team per pod each year (2)

They also set the Championship Game in Florida the first 5 years. FSU only made it the first game.

The divisions were set up on geography, it just happens that the teams in the east are the best.

As has been mentioned a number of times here, the divisions are going away after next year.

I like to think that played into Chryst getting fired this year. Winning the west, a fairly low bar that he was having trouble clearing, was a ticket to the B1G championship game and a likely NY6 bowl.

Won't be so easy going forward. No divisions and throwing USC and UCLA in makes it that much tougher for teams like UW and Iowa. UW's AD knows this.
