re: Best Streaming Device

Wanted to follow up on this discussion.

Like I said, I have an Apple TV4k, Sony STR-DN1080 receiver, and Sony A80J 77" OLED TV.

I use Youtube TV, and a variety of other streaming apps.

Here's what I've found:
As, notsince98, has pointed out, there are problems with Dolby Vision, and the ATV4k. Initially, I thought I was running at the best settings for my setup. No, not even close. Even running through ARC and with what I thought were good HDMI cables, it was some rather low settings.

I'll spare you the details.
I bought new cables, went through the variety of settings in the receiver, TV, and ATV4k and tried to get the best visuals I could.

Needless to say, it doesn't work as it should. From the obfuscated menus and settings, to the intermittent handshaking that the ATV4k does, it is a disappointing process with middling results. Sure, something like Dolby Vision, can look great for a time, but it isn't perfect.

In the end, I wound up resetting the ATV4k's video settings and just running 4k SDR. It looks fine, but it's not the "best."

I've used the Roku Ultra, Apple TV, and Firestick. Of the three, Apple TV by a wide margin. I've heard the Shield is good, but I've never used it. Firestick is garbage and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. There's a reason why they're so cheaply priced.

My experience with Apple TV...it's got a super clean UI, the apps are right on the front as soon as it's on (that's adjusted in the settings menu), and it's quick and snappy when going in and out of apps, settings, etc. I really do love Apple TV. The only thing that would make Apple TV perfect is a backlit remote.

If you need one for travel, Firestick can’t be beat. Hackable and can use it on hotel tv’s that have HDMI.

I bought a Roku Ultra due to my tv would not work with some streaming applications. I am now replacing that tv with a new Sony X90K that has Google TV.

Which one should I use for streaming?
