Staying 6 days in Basel in June. Don’t plan on having a car the whole time. I do plan on driving to Colmar France 1 day. Any other sites that are easy to get to by train or any sites/activities in Basel that the board might recommend? Will be with my wife and teen children.

Following as I am looking to do this trip next summer.

Some places I have seen based on my short research is:

Lucerne/Lake Lugano
Interlaken
Bern
Lauterbrunnen
and would have to see Matterhorn.

From my limited research there is no Hyatt hotels anywhere except the big cities which makes the planning a little tougher for me.

I have never been to Basel so I can’t help the OP much but I have been to all of the places you are going except for Lauterbrunen. That will be a wonderful trip.

Not much to add but I went to my last companies headquarters in Basel and it's a beautiful area. Didn't have time to do much outside of work and work dinners though unfortunately. Jealous.

Thanks for the responses. I have traveled in Switzerland before over 20 years ago. Just didn’t spend much time around Basel. I will say that I did go to both Lauterbrunnen and Bern. Bern was cool But Lauterbrunnen was spectacular. Don’t miss this. I’ll probably head to Lucerne. Would like to see some sites around Basel and maybe drive between small towns on the Swiss side of the Rhine. Don’t really have a good feel for that yet. Heading out in 3 weeks so I’ll post some info then for those planning to go.

Go if you can. It's even better in person.

Just got back and Basel was awesome. Super chill city with great cafe scene, great riverfront, more activities than we could pull off. Day trips to Lucerne, Zurich, and Colmar France. Could have done Bernese Oberland and Bern easily but have been there before and didn’t have enough time. I highly recommend Basel if you want an easy base of operations. I’d be happy to give advice if anyone heading that way.

Can you speak on the price points for eating out, activities, etc? I know it’s expensive…but wondering HOW expensive

What’s the main language in Basel? French?

Lauterbrunnen and Interlaken are both incredible.

Wasn't impressed with Lucerne other than a hub.

Main language is Swiss German but most speak English. There are many French speakers as well. Most speak all 3 languages.

As far as cost, public services like trams, museums, site entry are affordable especially with the “Basel Card” you get at any hotel. It’s included with the rooms. Public transport is free with this and most sites are deeply discounted. Restaurants are pricy. There is fine dining as expensive as any Paris Michelin rated restaurant. Most moderate places would have you spending $30 -$40 per person for full meal not including alcohol. A beer was $7-9. We were in an apartment 1 block from a Migros and ate many meals (and drinks) at the apartment. Then to a cafe for wine and dessert.

You can join the locals for Rhine Swimming for free!

If I had one day - start at Spalentor gate and walk through the old town, stop at the Rathaus plaza and continue up to the cathedral. Then walk down to the river directly downhill behind the cathedral. You'll see the water taxis there and head across to Kleinbasel (small Basel). On that side of the river head to Braueri Fischerstube and have a few Ueli Biers. Also maybe go for a swim in the Rhine if it is warm. Everyone else will be. Then head back across the river and wander all the small streets of the old town. Find a cafe you like and end the evening there. There's great art and museums but I'd just soak up the old town.
