Mass produced formulas as substitute for breastmilk began in the late 1800s. In the 1940s government regulatory law determined formulas should be physician approved before being marketed. At this point the formula companies began advertising directly to doctors.

From the 1950s onward doctors everywhere began recommending to mothers formula over breastfeeding. Formula was made by scientists who had determined the exact perfect concoction for a human baby. You can't know if your breasts are giving your baby all its nutrition, but this formula is guaranteed. It had to be better. You believe in science, don't you?

This reached a peak in mid 1970s when over 80% of US babies were formula fed, and the most widely cited reason was it was the healthiest and best thing to do for the child.

There is no doubt many of you on this board were formula fed because your parents were made to believe it was better by doctors and the general attitude in society.

Hundreds of American formula fed babies in the late 1970s died of toxicity to a certain protein in soy.

This also directly led to the "breastfeeding liberation" movements that began in the late 1970s

Of course the numerous studies published in the years after indisputably prove breastfeeding is superior, breastfed children are overall healthier, fewer hospital visits, longer lifespan, lower risk of seemingly every disease.

Much of the info here is in this link at Contemporary Pediatrics by Dr Andrew Schuman M.D. LINK

the science is always "settled".

until it isn't.

There have also been studies that show a correlation between breastfeeding length and intelligence.

The majority of soy is GMO and it’s one of the worst things you can consume and it’s in everything.

The fact that people bought into this ridiculous theory is astounding.

I mean breast milk only sustained life for millions of years, but I'm sure some quack's "formula" was vastly superior.

Correlation does not equal causation.

Isn't it often pointed out that some of these last generations are seriously screwed up in the head?

I guess the argument could be made for nuture rather than nature.

Total bullshite. Any doctor will tell you that modern medicine is about removing variables until the diagnosis is indisputable.

When sick infants came in, the first question inevitably was what have you (the mother) been eating? It was always a set of variables that had to be accounted for. The conventional wisdom being that if the child was on formula, you knew exactly what the variables were in the diet compared to the symptoms the patient presented. This making diagnosis a little easier compared to a mother who couldn’t always remember what she was eating, how it was prepared, etc..

That’s why many doctors pushed formula.

Don’t let that get in the way of your narrative. Dumbass.

Yeah, that's not what they told the mothers "Give formula so when your kid gets sick my job will be easier."

Eta: I also told you my source:

quote:

During this time, the percentage of women who breastfed their newborn reached an all-time low in part because of the ease of use and low cost of commercial formula and a belief that formulas were "medically approved" to provide optimal nutrition for young infants (Figure 2 in the print edition, Adapted from Fomon SJ: Infant feeding in the 20th century: Formula and beikost. J Nutr 2001;131:409S).

I wasn't aware that people thought it was better. Sounds retarded. It has been known the the mother (or now the husband lol) give disease resistance to the baby for a long time.

No amount of science can convince me that something beats breasts out in a head to head match. Ain't happening.

I've heard the opposite and even a close friend wrote her thesis on just that for her dietetics degree.

It isn't uncommon to line up 5 "scientists" and ask them to opine on a single topic.....and come away from it with 5 completely opposing hypotheses. Oftentimes dependent in large part by whom each scientist is employed and their varying interests.

Of course these days there is one accepted scientific viewpoint, the one on CNN. They can't grasp the concept of differing scientific theories. Much like 5 attorneys opining on the same law.
