Yes, and a much larger part than most people probably think.

Also, it's a much smaller world now than it used to be. If you were a Michigan grad in Chicago in 1995, the people you interacted with at work went to schools like Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Northwestern, etc. Winning the Big Ten and the Rose Bowl were ultimate bragging rights.

Now, you're just as likely to work with Alabama, USC, Florida State, Oklahoma, etc... alumni in Chicago, and all of a sudden, just being the best team in your state/region doesn't matter nearly as much when your coworkers are counting national championship rings. Social media amplifies this by 1000.

As far as dan I can see an argument that it was “fast” but look how they finished last year and his performance this year.

Mullen definitely allowed his team to quit two straight seasons and is just a massive prick.

I think part of it is once there is a dip, it’s easy for the bottom to fall out quick. In the sec, any sign of weakness gets attacked in recruiting, the fans and media can be vicious.

Once there is blood in the water, it affects every level of the program and there is no coming back from it. So the only alternative is to cut bait befor you completely lose the fans.

Dan was 2-9 the last 11 games. Is that correct?

I think it’s pointless to can Sark. They already took the dive and fired Herman last year after a 7-3 season. Own it. Tell Sark to make changes to the staff (particularly on defense) and improve next year (can’t get much worse).

That said, if I’m a UT fan, I’d probably want him gone ASAP. Not sure who they’d get that’s better this offseason given all the high-profile openings.

Firing Herman after the Kung Flu year was stupid. Texas is getting what they deserve.

I would feel worse for coaches if they didn’t flirt with other schools to get raises and extensions when they had one good year.

That makes fans mad and want to fire coaches for being mediocre three years in a row.

I think most fan bases would settle for Les Miles results.

Or Georgia results under Mark Richt, excluding 2010, with a Natty, or two, mixed in.

Too short? Who's been fired of late that didn't deserve it?

If coaches like O and Mullen were allowed to continue those programs would be set back for years. The leash is where it should be.

Its starting to look like Herman didnt deserve to be fired by Texas after a 3 loss season during the COVID year.

People should use twitter for business or to keep up with family and friends.

If you want to talk your team's football coach, and or players, do it on a bulletin board, not on twitter.

I hope college administrators aren't paying attention to it. Paying attention to it, is what started ESPN's decline.

I agree fans to have crazy expectations but LSU and UF weren’t getting mediocre results. They weren’t losing 3 or 4 games due to injury or bad luck

The highest factor for all the in-season turnover now is mainly because of the December early signing day.

If you wait now and fire a guy after the season, your new coach has zero ability to salvage or improve a class and the school essentially loses a year of recruits.

South Carolina finished in the 70s last season and this year they will be in the 20s or high teens. That's all because of their coaching change last year.

And now, once one school fires a coach early, everyone else has to follow suit so their big targets don't get all swooped up and the School is left hiring a guy worse than they just fired because no one is left on the market.

It's all dominos and USC pulled the first one early this year.

It's a by-product of the playoff or bust mentality. This is also why they are making all the bread.

Look at the salaries

I have to admit this is a legit point. When I first saw the OPs question I was going to say yes because I remember back when I was growing up and as a young man that the schools and fans were much more patient with the coaches and teams.

But back then the coaches didn't make the extremely high salaries they do now and the sport didn't seem to be as money driven. Combine that with the modern viewpoint many people have that they either win a national championship or they're a complete failure and it's just how it is for them now. Buy the ticket, take the ride

It’s weird how money should follow results, but now we all pay upfront for potential.

A lot of these buyouts are due to both the rising tide of salaries in CFB, but also because ADs are getting played over and over again by agents.

Why should Steve Sarkisian get a $30 million contract from Texas after he’s failed at 2 jobs and was a coordinator?

Mel Tucker’s contract extension is nonsensical. Hell, he got $5.5 million a year from Michigan State in his first deal, and he was coming off one season as a head coach at Colorado where he was 5-7.

Bret Bielema got an asinine extension and buyout from Arkansas after the 2014 season, when he was sitting on a record of 10-15 (2-14 in SEC) because “it was heading in the right direction.”

I don’t know what kind of market correction may happen, or if it even will, but these contracts are profoundly stupid.

One thing I will say in defense of the coaches is that the job has changed so much in the last few decades to where it’s reached the point with 24x7x365 recruiting of being almost tougher than being an NFL coach, so I don’t blame these coaches for taking the money and kicking back after getting ground down for a decade.

This.

The guy was 7-3 with a bowl win in a year that was pretty much a throwaway season in college football. They should’ve kept him for one more season.

What’s dumber is that they paid Tom Herman $17 million to go away so that they could pay $32 million to Steve Sarkisian, a guy who was mediocre at two P5 jobs (one of which was a blue blood) and was a coordinator at Alabama.

You pay Tom Herman that kind of money to go away so that you can land Urban Meyer or someone like him. You don’t fire Tom Herman so that you can hire Steve Sarkisian.
