During the baseball search he floats Pat Casey out there to get all the National and West Coast guys off his trail. All the while zeroing in on JJ.
Same play here. Lincoln Riley smoke gets the Big12 and National guys looking one way while he locks up Dave Aranda.

This ain’t baseball and it isn’t Woodward’s fault it leaked, but Riley has been his target.
In fact it’s impressive the smoke didn’t get thick until this week despite Riley having an offer for over a month.

Riley’s the biggest fish out there. Why would you make it look like you failed and settled?
And I’m not really talking about if we end up with Aranda because he’s great and people will be excited, but if we dip into tier 2 guys it will look bad.

Nah. College Football is too big a business to keep this totally hush. It’s like the 2016 hire. We knew who the players were, our AD was just a frick but who didn’t have contingency plans in place. Woodward is zeroing in and I don’t think he lets Riley get away, but if that does happen, he’s not gonna knee jerk hire Corey Raymond as head coach.

People keep bringing up the baseball search as evidence that Riley is somehow all misdirection.
When Woodward was at A&M, all the smoke for the entire month of November was around Jimbo. And, in the end, it ended up being Jimbo.
There is a lot more smoke here for Riley than there was for many of the baseball candidates. I'd say this is genuine and that Riley has been Woodward's guy for a while.

He went after Riley. Stop with this smokescreen shite. Riley is his main target and he will have the choice to make. If he turns it down then Woodward will go after his second target. I’m sure Riley isn’t the only person Woodward has talked to but most likely the first he made an offer to.

Think he had pretty serious conversations with the FL baseball coach too. I don’t know if there was an actual offer on the table but money was discussed because dude got an extension and facilities upgrade commitment from FL. College football is more high profile so more leaks. If SW misses on Riley he’ll get somebody good.

The big splash hire that y'all are so desperate for is not always the best choice. Aranda wouldn't be a huge splash, but the guy is smart and would always have this team disciplined, prepared and ready to execute. Look at Baylor. They hardly ever commit penalties and they play hard-nosed football for 4 quarters. The guy understands the way the game works and thinks about it differently than most other people and that is more valuable than a splashy hire in my book.

It’s weird that people laugh about smokescreens but yet insist anonymous people on a message board can torpedo a deal by “leaking it”
