Though many policyholders already are aware, Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon told a task force Monday that auto insurance rates have gone up since a new law went into effect that limits access to the courts that was sold with the promise of lowering the rates.

What was the percentage it went up? Also with inflation, what the hell didn’t go up besides my wages?

Lawyers were only part of the problem
Other and probably bigger problem is the number of uninsured assholes out there and they cause a disproportionately large number of the accidents
My rate actually went down this year fwiw

Insurance companies lied about the effects of a bill they endorsed? No fricking way.

< 1% when inflation is out of control across the country.
Nice spin, though, Mr personal injury attorney.

There’s lots, and lots, of uninsured assholes in the state of Louisiana. At least they can’t claim bodily injury uninsured and they’ll end up getting their shite towed once the cops arrive.

The real question anyone with a brain should be asking is how much would rates have gone up without this legislation versus since it passed.

How does this compare to other states? Lots more people on the road now.

Why don’t we just get universal car insurance?

That's why u compare to other states. Actuarially it could be a result of a bunch of things. Pinpointing it on one thing is usually stupid talking point.

There’s a shocker. You mean you cannot trust insurance companies and their lobbiests?

Louisiana was one of eight states that saw its insurance rates rise. Other states’ insurance rates went down.
I’m all for tort reform done wisely. However, I hate it was lied about and tied to lowering insurance which was pushed by big business unions and insurance companies.

That problem existed before the new law. If what you are saying is true then it should have already been factored in to prior costs prior to the new law. It’s not like a huge number of people became uninsured since the new law came into place. Insurance companies got favorable law, which will limit liability and still raised rates. If for no other reason than aesthetics they should have at least lowered rates for six months.
Legislature should have included a provision that rescinded the new law if rates did not go down consistent with percentages lobbyists said they would. That would have been simple and should not have drawn any objections from insurance companies if what they were saying was true.

That so called “tort reform” law was a joke.

Just moved out of state, my insurance for 2 cars dropped $84/month with the same coverage. There was a change of company as well but that is a significant drop.

Is that true?
Posted on 11/15/21 at 7:39 pm to Cosmo
It’s true only to the extent that the uninsured can’t claim the first 15k of bodily injury. So for instance, if an uninsured driver gets in a wreck and has a 100k claim, he would only get 85k. 15k claim gets nothing.

Louisiana is a pay to play state.

Well 100k claim should get nothing

At the end of the day, if the plaintiffs and their attorneys are still coordinating with doctors to exhaust policies on every accident that occurs, payouts haven’t decreased and premiums won’t be going down.
