I'm looking for recs for reputable organizations to go on an international mission trip with. Ideally, it would be with a local organization. I'm in southeast Louisiana, but if there is a solid national organization that others have had good experiences with, I'd consider that too. I am in the medical field so it could be medical, however I'm open to other types of outreach, i.e. construction. My first choice destination would be somewhere in Africa, but certainly open to other places.

My sister in law did Africa, India and Haiti. I don’t know how she did it but I have much respect for those people that do

I know a guy that goes to Costa Rica for 3 months every year.

Or you could just join the Cajun Navy

Could you check with your state/local Baptist groups? Most of them have missions with medical needs they organize.

Are you not going to fulfill your self imposed ban?

Do it.

Maybe through the international mission board if you wanted to go that route

I went to Zimbabwe on one where we went through South Africa and also did Botswana and it was amazing .

Really helped me put things into perspective

I wish all Americans could go and see how good we have it here

Try these folks. My ex’s sister goes in mission trips with them every year.

I'd recommend not going to Haiti and Honduras. I was in Honduras during a military coup. Go somewhere that has been ravished by hurricanes. Maybe talk to your local pastor/priest or utilize the Google's. If they don't seek a bigger church. Most of your "megachurches" have multiple active mission trips going on throughout the year. Surely one of the OT doctors has a rec.

If you have a skill that's not available there, that's one thing. If you're just going to do construction, it's much, much better sending your money to reputable organizations that will hire local people to do the work. There's nothing inherently wrong with short term mission trips. But depending on the circumstances, it can be counterproductive. And a lot of people treat it as more tourism than mission.

Episcopal Diocese of MS has a Honduras mission trip annually that uses dentists but would love to have a physician. Legit and worthy cause, good folks involved.
