I'll swap an income tax for no income tax. Can that be an option?

Well if you have no income then you pay no income tax

Yes. As long as it has minimums that give a pre-bate to the poor.

You speak as if we actually have a choice.

No because prices would be astronomical and crime would skyrocket. This why gov't won't go for this. They like getting us from both ends.

No. As many times as “income” has been defined and redefined, I’d hate to find out what their definitions of “consumption” would be.

Yes, this way everyone who consumes items will pay it.
That means undocumented workers will pay for their consumption just like I will.
This usually favors the rich as they save.
At the end of the day everyone pays as the consume items.

The people on this thread who say no obviously don't pay Federal Income Taxes.
That's the problem and it needs to change.
They sure as hell aren't exempt from local and state taxes.
Why should they be exempt from Federal taxes?

If the income tax were abolished, I would prefer the consumption tax. Things being the way they are, I am quite concerned the income tax won’t be abolished and we will have both.

In a heartbeat, there is way too much fraud and unreported income in this country. Eliminating the IRS alone would save 12+ billion a year.

You must be poor.
