LSU has been the land of meh quarterbacks for decades now. We got spoiled with Joe Burrow at QB and now our expectations are sky-high for a program that isn't used to good QB play.

He's been better than any quarterback since Mett. Save the Etling comments. He was a below average quarterback with an significantly better weapons.

Etling had

RB: Guice, Fournette, Williams

TE: Moreau

WR: Chark, Gage, Anderson

Max had a better WR1, who is now out for the season. That's about it.

Max is the second best QB we’ve had since Mett

Well that’s not even remotely true. Brennan and Etling were much better.

MJ Is a good quarterback Who Is not comfortable in whatever system they are trying to run. And that is a coaching issue. And that’s why he looks like he’s gotten worse since last year

Since Mett, we've had Harris, Jennings, Etling, Burrow, Johnson and Brennan. The only QBs I can definitely say were worse than Max were Harris and Jennings.

This. Peetz is 100% the reason for Max’s regression.

His arm strength is not getting any better because he rarely steps into any throws. Thus, his deep ball is no threat because it just hangs in the air like a punt. Because of that his anticipation has to be perfect...and right now he is just late and only effective if the receiver is WIDE open. He can't get throws into tight windows. That COULD improve with more play obviously, but when? He has 11 starts in his career. Of course, that doesn't sound like much. But in a world where it is not uncommon for young QBs to mature and have success quickly, why does LSU appear to be the only P5 school where they can only find success at QB if the QB is a 4th or 5th year player?

Thus far, he looks to be the same type of player as his dad. A guy that can win you games if other aspects of the team are really good. But he's not a guy that can routinely carry a team and/or overcome some deficiencies in other areas. He hasn't had a ton of help from his OL and OC this year. But in spots where LSU has needed their QB to make big plays for them he simply hasn't made many.

Man I’d like to smoke whatever y’all are having if you think Etling was a better QB. I agree that MB is better, but he hasn’t been able to play much because of Burrow and injuries, so we’ll really never know. Btw, during the summer I thought MB should be the starter, and everyone on here was shitting on me for saying that, telling me how much better Max is than MB, and how Max was going to win the heisman and all this.

He’s gotten worse because fundamentally he plays the position poorly. Guys are running wide open all the time and he’s even missing the few he does see. That’s not a play calling issue at all. He stares at the rush, he locks on to one guy on every play, he bails if that guy isn’t open right away, his feet are terrible which leads to poor accuracy and he can’t move within the pocket.

If you know what you’re looking at Etling was a lot better but if you wanna just use numbers, even in an antiquated system Etling had a higher passer rating (3rd all time at LSU when he left), had more big plays (record for 40+ yard completions his second season) averaged more yards per attempt and completion and had fewer turnovers.

Etling played in a system built around power running and still averaged more yards per attempt, had an equivalent completion percentage, had a better TD:INT ratio (16:2), and a higher QB rating. There are plenty of arguments to be made that he's better than Max. I'm not saying he was better necessarily, but to say someone has to be smoking something to make such an argument is ignorant.

CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, and Caleb Williams are all in their first year and are all significantly better than Max Johnson.

But I guess LSU fans are now back to employing the "we need a senior QB to have a good offense" excuse.

Max has a horrible arm and is grossly inaccurate.

No, fans like you are simply a return to the LSU normal.

Kid is a good qb and will get better with age.

He also refuses to get the ball out on time. That’s what really bugs me the most. Burrow was a badass because he had that ball out on time. I invite anyone reading this to go watch the fourth down attempt to Bech. When Bech broke on his route, he’s open. Johnson was staring at him. He held it a second too long, and by then the DB had recovered and the OL was getting pushed into Max. This happens almost every play.

We bitched about the OL not giving him time earlier in the season, but they provided enough time Saturday. The problem is that they will never be able to give him enough time if he just stands there and waits to throw. This amplifies his lack of power, because he’s having to throw the perfect pass once DBs recover. It’s why he underthrows any deep routes called. That’s not even addressing the issue of throwing off his back foot.

If Max is going to succeed anywhere, he has got to start trusting his receivers and getting the ball out on time. He’s making the position impossible for himself.
