I made these comments in a text thread last night among friends but I was curious how this board would take them.

I think Daronte has potential and just got hired too quickly when he wasn't quite ready to completely run a defense (in a situation where he had no option to learn on the job over a couple of years under a complete moron who doesn't understand defense at all).

Does anyone else think that if Jones just goes to another team for a couple years as a positional coach or co-DC where there is an established guy (like UGA, Bama, Baylor, etc.), he could come out in a few years as a legitimately elite DC candidate?

Jones seems to have a good understanding of game planning and has shown versatility over the year has progressed. Where he needs help is in adjusting to when offenses adjust, which is typically the final step in development. Say he goes to Baylor under the best adjustment DC in CFB (Aranda) and learns from it. He could be a really, REALLY good DC (in CFB at least).

I don’t trust a coach who suddenly decides to do his job in one game after coasting through the previous ones. You either do your job every game or move on.

I think so. But we’re also 2 weeks removed from Ole Miss abusing him.

I will say this, with all his horses we’re probably looking at a top 2-5 defense in the sec the 2nd half of the season.

His boss has the IQ of a glass of warm water but think he's smarter than Dave Aranda. Don't blame him for that.

He’s gotten better no doubt. May end up going back to the NFL but I’m sure he could find P5 DC spot next year if he wanted

With the 3-man dominant line, it seems that way.

Maybe the injuries have forced Os hands finally

The improvement in the LB play has been amazing. Idk if it’s just Damone going freak mode or coaching but it’s been noticeable. Give Blake Baker some props too.

I wonder if Coach O has tied his hands in game planning prior to Bama ! The Bama game is the first game where we saw some serious blitzing/aggressive defense. Alabama had a net 6 yards running the ball . We lost the game with poor defense against the pass and serious problems on the offensive side ! The pass defense was impacted by injuries !

O just needs to stay out of DJs way and let the man call the defense

If Aranda is hired that would be the best situation for him. He could remain DC and pickup some things from Aranda.

He's definitely the better of the two but people are missing that he had two weeks to prep for Bama. So if he could show the same improvement on a week to week basis then yeah I think he deserves another shot somewhere else.

This is the only case of where I wouldn't be mad about keeping him, you can't get a OC minded head coach and put a learn on the job DC with him. Daronte won't develop his own skills in that situation.

It seems like last night was the first time we blitzed all year

Pretty obvious that Orgeron let Jones coach for once. There’s no way in hell O would’ve wanted to go to a 3 lineman look

First time we used primarily a 3 man front and first time we blitzed a decent amount. Think we caught bama by surprise. We know how much O hated the 3 man front. So im thinking daronte got more pull this week
