I had the luxury today to visit the mall of Louisiana and noticed a very large portion of handicap tags in vehicles. Doesn’t the large population of folks with them diminish the effectiveness of said tags? And if that’s true, then do the folks that actually need them feel pretty pissed off?

It used to be hard to get. My parents waited forever to get them, and my dad was using a walker at the time.

Now you see young people roll up, whip out the tag, hop out of their car and stroll into the store.

It makes me want to rage.

Ive refused to get the tags, I can walk and parking close should be reserved for those that actually need it

Do you have a disability? I have no issue with someone who need one getting one, but it appears they give them to anyone anymore, and they give them 2-3 and it gets passed around the family.

I see young people put them on, go in stores, then hop back in the car, and pull it off before backing out of their space.

I used to have one after a major surgery. I never used it because I could crutch fine and I respected those who probably had it worse than me. I did take advantage of it at the end of expiration at Disney though.

Completely agree without fail, the folks I saw exiting cars with handicap tags seemed as heathy as I am.

Well, I mean, you deserve to use one should you want to.

Lots of people get them after major surgery and they are good for a year. But they only really need it for a few months.

I've got one. It's legit, but it was criminally easy to get. Only options were temporary (1 year) or permanent (lifetime). Difference was just a box for the doctor to check.

I keep it and pay the $1.00 renewal every few years even though I don't use it. Ever. I do loan it to my FIL when he travels with my wife. He absolutely needs/deserves it full time (retired military, injured in Vietnam, 2 reconstructed ankles, blown knee, etc.), but he refuses to get his own--even after his doctor gave him the signed paperwork.

Mainly, I keep it as an insurance policy in case I ever inadvertently park in a restricted space. Those fines are huge--not that they are ever enforced.

I worked with a guy who was a paraplegic. He never parked in those spots because his mindset was that he could do whatever any able bodied person could. And he pretty much could. Drove everywhere. Went bass fishing alone. We learned to scuba dive together. He rode a recumbent bicycle with hand pedals. He didn’t need a ramp. He’d pull a wheelie and go right up or down stairs. He was pretty damn amazing.
