My son wanted this for his birthday but he is going to be really disappointed this year lol this card still has 5 more days to go so I can’t imagine what the final price is going to be when it’s all said and done.

I find it odd that baseball, football and basketball cards went over two decades of being obsolete and no one talking about them to being popular again.

Did anyone see this coming or are you surprised by this?

Take a look at this thread from just 2015:

People are taking their money out the stock market and buying cards, art, watches, and so on.

I haven’t collected in a few year because it was getting very expensive. When I was, I had to stay away from buying top rookie cards on eBay because of the insane mark up.

Wasn't this predictable? The same thing happened in the 90s. I used to be a pretty avid collector as a kid. Had a bunch of cards valued, at the time, in the 4 figure range and they aren't worth close to that last time I checked.

Do what?

So why isn't the market tanking?

The market is tanking - you just haven’t realized you are the bag holder yet

The boys that collected them became middle-aged men with the money to buy them?

Childhood things become more valuable as those kids turn into 30-40 year olds with income

-sports cards
-legos
-marvel/comic book stuff

even on a smaller scale I’ve seen so much retro movie and tv show clothing and merch from brands recently (Sandlot, TNMNT cartoon, Home Alone, old Nickelodeon etc.)

If you want to make money in 10 years, figure out what will be nostalgic for people born in early 2000s

This has been posted multiple times and people continue to downvote this theory to hell and back, but professional memorabilia traders will absolutely confirm this as a huge factor.

This song has been sang for almost 2 years now.

There are always ebbs and flows to any collectible market. People think there will be a collective "burst" when in reality, it will be a very slow decline for some period and then a uptick back. There has already been a slow decline, but it's steadily rising again.

People keep saying "This stuff is printed into the ground (which is true) it's going to collapse any minute now" without even considering the exponential increase in demand in the hobby.

With all the money the government gave away last year it opened up a lot of areas to spend that were unforeseen.
