An agent's thoughts on Zion's team/crew

There are several posts and comments that question Zion's maturity and whether or not his team (trainer, nutritionist etc.) is being vetted. I am a sports agent who has and does currently represent professional basketball players all over the world.
I would be willing to bet that CAA is 100% on board and may have even suggested that (1) Zion's stepfather be his trainer; (2) Zion's mother be his nutrionist; and (3) not workout with his teammates.
Why? Because it is in CAA's interests to keep Zion's circle super small until he signs his second contract. CAA knows that he is going to get a mega contract and does not want any other trainer, nutritionist, or player getting in Zion's ear about things that agents do for other clients.
This is likely the same for how Rich Paul is handling Ben Simmons with who he trains and workouts with.
They know that these athletes are going to get mega contracts and it is in the agency's best interest to keep them as a client, which means limiting their interactions with others.
Is it messed up? Absolutely. But, at the end of the day, this happens a lot.
My post is not meant to take away any blame or responsibility on Zion or the Pelicans front office. This is purely to shed light on a different perspective that I do not think is talked about enough, and that is that Zion is likely following the advice of his management.

Hmmmm
Well its on Zion and his family for not seeing through this and thinking "Well this is a stupid idea", and on the Pelicans for not being able to get across how dumb this is.
There's likely some validity to this and if so, it sucks.

I do not disagree but it is a very hard position for the player to be in.
Keep in mind that Zion has likely been nothing more than a "future cash cow" to the vast majority of his family and friends since he was in middle school / high school. Also, i guarantee you his mother and step-father are getting paid for their services. So, its easy for them to turn a blind eye.
The biggest frustration i have with this industry is that it is really hard to provide good advice, that actually sticks, when the players are often surrounded by people who do not have the player's best interest and also do not actually understand what the player actually needs.
In their mind, he is the best and will be the best whether or not they train with the best and/or have a proper nutrionist.
While Lamar Odom was an extreme example, he was paying for 70+ (or something close to it) cell phones because he couldnt say no to the people he grew up with.
It is an unfortunate industry where a lot of people get taken advantage of.

If they suggested my nutritionist be my mom, I'd fire them. And especially not working out with teammates.

Obviously every agent wants Zion. The real cash cow for any agent is endorsements.
I believe an agent gets a much
larger percentage from endorsements than a NBA contract.
That's why it makes sense for an agent to do everything possible to assist Zion to become a better player.
CAA has the resources to hire trainers, nutritionists or whatever is needed and still retain his parents on payroll.
The real question is Zion's desire to be the best.

Ben already has his contract and these agents have tons of other clients that don't have family as trainers.

This is defintiely not a CAA thing.

Yeah I would think that CAA would want him to have a private nutritionist that is a professional and private trainer that has one client, him. That would still keep the circle very small.
They want him to be the best.
This is a Zion and his family thing.

CAA and Pelicans Organization
One is an employer investing their money into a player and his success on the court.
Other is a blood sucking leech sucking monies away from said player.

It really blows my mind that the way Zion came into summer league and the way he looked when he returned to the bubble that he still doesn't have a nutritionist and a personal chef. Keeping his body top notch shape should be his whole team number 1 goal as that could be the difference in 100's of millions of dollars.

I think Zion doesn't see a problem.
He has still dominated and thinks his shape is "fine" and that he gets into better shape in camp.
He might not see an issue until he's a more mature adult in his mid to late 20s. And by then he will be on another team unfortunately

So if my asset is Zion why would I limit his potential by not hiring the best staff to develop him? Makes no sense.

Zion already signed a $100m endorsement deal with Nike. I promise you, his agency has made money.

Protectionism. Nothing more.
They don’t want to upset him and risk losing him. They don’t want to push him too hard and risk losing him.
Also, they saw what happened with AD, Reddick and I’m sure others and can try and point any blame as the fault of a struggling/inept franchise.
I’m not saying it makes sense. I’m telling you it happens.

I agree with this 100% and have some, albeit little, insider knowledge. I don't have Pelicans or Zion specific knowledge but agency knowledge and how far that protectionism runs.

NBA max contract doing work. Zion is getting a max deal b/c he's worth a lot more than the max deal. If the NBA didn't have max contracts you could argue he's hurting his value, but since that decrease still makes his value fall above the max threshold, it's irrelevant.

No it's not. He's got a real opportunity of getting the Rose supermax but he has to make all nba this year to get it. That's more money than the standard max.

It’s fricking stupid. His parents think they are breaking new ground like “oh this is the best way forward and we know best”
