What y’all shooting at ducks this season?
My 12 gauge has a briley light modified shooting Migra 2 x 4 (that’s what I found in the store this week).
My 20 has a factory modified shooting Boss bismuth #5 ( lot left over from last season).
Probably going to take the twenty most days.

I found some hevi steel 3.5 no. 2s that were available. There was very little to choose between so I couldn’t be too picky. I’ve had a light modified choke for 15 years. I can’t remember what brand. The markings are worn off. It’s great for dove & duck

Go modified with #4 shot. More pellets in the kill zone of a duck. Larger sizes = less pellets

How would a 16 gauge, modified choke with 2 and 3/4 inch shells do on ducks?

What would be about the maximum range of effectiveness?

Been very happy with results of my pattern master.

Tight pattern. Either dead or clean miss.

Probably 30-35 yards. May could do 40 with a full choke. I'd try #4, #5, #6 shot. See which one does best. Set up a target at 35 yards with the modified choke. Shoot a paper plate. see which shot size puts more shot in the plate. The higher the number the smaller the shot size, but the shell has more numbers of shot per shell. You may get more shot from #5's in the plate than #4's, because the #5's have more shot. Same with the # 6's. The more shot you get into that duck's chest and vital organs, the more you will kill.

Just see which size your 16 gauge performs best with.

What's the best barrel length for duck guns? Is 28" too long?

My favorite old Winchester is 28.5" barrel.

It reaches out and touches em.

I've shot ducks my dad's friend said were too far. I aggravated him cause his poor dog had to go so far to get it we had to go get her in the boat. She's was going to wear out and drown before getting back. She was an older dog.

Fine. I hunted ducks for years with a 2.75" 20 gauge with a modified choke.

For a beretta 391 or a400 a factory mod extended choke w 3" 3s for ducks. For geese same for early season and maybe a light full after December w BBs. Ammo that patterns well in those guns is kent fast steel 1550 fps or winchester steel at 1500 fps.

I have always just used whatever choke was in the gun. I know a lot of people are gonna disagree, and its very location dependent. But whatever you get, choke wise, practice with it because changing it up on the fly can sometimes lead to missing birds that you'd normally get no problem.

ETA: it really doesn't matter as long as you have gotten used to shooting it. But for open water south La, you might wanna get something tighter.
