He's a hell of a coach. His fatal flaw is a tendency to get too cute with the playcalling in important regular season andplayoff games.

Gonna be top 10 all time

Is Sean a HoF coach?
I say his resume makes him eligible for the consideration

Ol Sean climbing up. He’s neck and neck with two other coaches-for good reason-that have also been around for an epic long time.

I would say he has a strong case if he can sustain success without Drew. I mean, he isn't even 60 years old yet. While I don't see him coaching into his 70s like Belichick and Carroll will, I think he has another decade in him.
ETA: Despite Sean being in 23rd place. Only 4 coaches ahead of him have a better win percentage (Tomlin, Belichick, Halas, Shula) so he is in much more elite company than I though. just needs another ring and it is an absolute lock.

Is Bill Belichick a HOF Coach? His 5 years in cleveland don't look good.

He should land top 20 at the very least this year.
Top 18 if we're truly elite.

Carroll and Tomlin are active coaches, so Payton will be shadowing them or slowly passing them.

He’s going to crack the top 10 sooner rather than later, with at least one ring. I think once he gets to about that 175 wins mark or so, he’s pretty much a lock for the Hall of Fame

The thing that separates Sean from Tomlin and Carroll is the organizations and situations they took control of. Tomlin inherited a SB team with a SB QB and a historic franchise from Cowher. Carroll, while the Seahawks aren't a historic world beater or anything, they had a lot of success in the 00s before he got there even making a SB appearance.
Sean Payton took the Saints, which were the joke of the league for 4 decades, coming off of a 3-13 season after Katrina with basically no hope with threats of relocation, and turned them into a year-in year-out threat and won a title in New Orleans and even since then has kept them towards the top of the league every year. There has never been a period in NOLA that's even sniffed what he's been able to do here.
The context of what Sean Payton has built, and maintained here in NOLA is already HOF in my eyes.

There is literally no way Payton doesn't walk right into the hall of fame. It is not only the fact he has a Super Bowl ring and a great all time record, but he is considered the premier offensive mind of this generation.
