Generac Oil Filter Tip

So, by now many of us have learned that the engines on the Generacs use a fair amount of oil.
We also know that running them in this +90 degree weather is hard on them- and many of us will be running them for a few more weeks at least.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a way to increase oil capacity by a lot? It would run a little cooler and also have extended run times before you needed to add oil.
There is a way….
Instead of the little Generac filter or the little smaller filter from the auto parts place….did you know a Napa 1515 or Fram PH8A or equivalent will fit? That’s the filter that Ford used on V8s from the 70s to the 90s. It’s BIG by modern standards. Like huge.
Yep- same base. Next time, get one of those. They hold about a pint more oil and your generator will really thank you!

My generator engine is the same as my mud boat.
I treat my myd boat exponentially worse than my generator jumping up to start my AC. I change my generator oil more often.
She gonna be fine.

My portable generac doesn’t even have an oil filter. I went to check it this morning and figure out what size to replace it with and realized it doesn’t have one. I didn’t believe my eyes so I called customer support to confirm and sure enough, no oil filter. I’ve never heard of that before.

Could you add an oil cooler?

Watch for adding oil. We thought low oil was the issue. Now adding oil was the issue.

No wonder y’all are blowing up your generators. Do not use any other filter. The cross reference websites are unreliable. It is about more than thread size. Oil filters are important to filter the oil, but they also have rated flow rates, induced head pressure in the oil system, etc.

FYI- the guys who came up with this plan (me) and another friend have 47 combined years of engineering experience in the OEM off highway world for a company significantly bigger than Generac so we’re good.
Promise.
Promise.

I’m glad to know my Generac is not the only one drinking oil. I’ve been shutting it down every 24 hours and have been having to add 4-6 ounces.
eta: The only thing that worries me about that is if I’m out of town and not here to keep an eye on it it’s going to hand grenade.

We were surprised as well. But I will give them this- I admittedly beat up on Generac in the other thread- until I got to my parents house and found out my dad hadn’t checked the oil all week- about a pint came out, maybe a bit less. They are apparently tough little engines to keep running like that.

They don't have low oil auto shut off ?

mine had low oil cut off. I honestly need to change the oil but it's full.

Alright Mr. Know-it-all. Riddle me this, I’ve heard that using synthetic motorcycle oil is best for these engines due to the engineering for higher RPMs. Any truth to this? TIA

You do realize that too much oil can also harm an engine?

Been using Mobile1 for 12 years in mine. No problems yet.
