I’m having trouble getting my washer and gas dryer to work off of my generators. Both are speed Queen mid level models. I’ve got power to them, even isolated an entire generator dedicated to them and they still don’t work. Would it be something with dirty power from a generator?

gas dryer

Why would this need a generator?

Tried my washer today and it turned on but wouldn’t go further than the electronics lighting up. Even had the entire 8,000 watts generator going to that circuit.

Jesus christ can people not go a few days without washing clothes?

Do you only have 3 tshirts and pairs of underwear?

This is why there are gas lines, shitheads are running their speed queen

Try washing the dirty power and hang it outside to dry.

I googled Speed Queen and it looks like the washer may take over 5300 ways to operate. Obviously that depends on your particular model. That may be the starting power or the peak power required somewhere in the cycle. I don’t know because I’m not an electrician. Anyway, my best guess is that your generator doesn’t have enough power to meet the peak demand.

You need to know the power draw of your appliances in watts. This is found on the manufacturer nameplate, expressed as amps or watts. If the plate gives the watts, then it’s easy. If amps are given, convert amps to watts by multiplying the amps times the voltage.

Let’s use a fancy LG Wi-Fi enabled electric dryer for my example. On the nameplate it says it draws 30 amps at 240 volts.
You multiply 30 by 240 volts to get 7200 watts.

That is your running wattage.

A dryer motor (any motor) also needs a jolt of about three times its running wattage to start up, but this surge is needed for only a fraction of a second. To run the dryer in this example, you will need a generator that can handle 7200 watts for long periods and a surge of 21,600 watts for a split second.

8000 watt generator. Is it running on gasoline, NG, or propane? NG or propane will degrade the watt output

Also an electric motor will require more amps at start up, but only for a fraction of a second, but enough to kill the operation if too many amps.

Also, high temps can effect generator output. And again Ferand to total watt output

I was having issues pulling over 12 total amps on my panel with my tri-fuel 8000 watt generator on NG during the peak temp part of the day. But nights were better.

Hand wash and hang on a clothesline.

It worked at one time.

Try running the washer on delicate cycle. This should cause thf motor to run slower and maybe draw less current on startup.

Also if you have a good power filter or even a battery backup, try plugging the washer into that. Probably just dirty power. An inverter might work better.

Good luck with all the family in your house. Going to be some trying times.

I ran my Speed Queen top load once yesterday with no problems. Can't remember if I used the propane run generator with 6750 or gasoline generator with 5000 constant...I alternate them. Used a heavy gauge extension cord and washer was the only thing connected. The load was fairly light consisting of twin sheet set, mattress cover and very light blanket. We hung dried inside with fans blowing. So at least the washing part can be done.

generators don't bond the neutral to the ground internally sometimes, some appliances need this bond in order to operate

so if you dont feed your breaker panel with the generator this bond won't be made and you'd have to do it a different way, i used a plug that you can use to make a custom extension cord and put a small jumper from neutral to ground inside of it
