Imo it depends on why you were looking elsewhere. If it was due to something dealing with your current job not being to your liking then leave. If pay was the issue and you like your job then stay. Sometimes the only way to get substantial raises is to throw other job offers on the table in my field.

Late to this thread.
I haven't heard many "success stories" from people who accepted a counter offer from their current employer.
If you wanted to leave, for whatever reason, and got a good offer elsewhere, then follow through and leave.
Companies generally don't "fix themselves" and whatever drove you to look for work elsewhere it's likely a few hundred bucks a week wouldn't fix it.
My $0.02 and worth what you paid...

Pretty sure if I accept the counter and if anything goes wrong I would be the first to be let go since they know I have already looked elsewhere.
Not necessarily. If something goes wrong at the new company you might be the first to go since you are one of the last people to get hired.. If its a good enough offer you are willing to stay.. Then stay, if you are looking for a change then take the new job.

I've never even sat to hear a counter offer. Why would you unless you've recieved an unsolicited offer. They're admitting that you've been underpaid.

Personally I wouldn’t ever accept a counter offer but I work with someone who quit and then got a very good counter offer. The CEO himself asked him to reconsider. For him I think he made a good decision to take it and stay.
