The mistake was: We simply trusted them

We trained them, we gave them our weaponry, and we thought that after a generation, we could (and should) leave, and they would at least be able to hold the line for a few months.
Enough time to get out everyone who wanted / needed to get out.
In the back of minds, maybe we thought eventually the Taliban would win out... but the Afghan military / government would at least put up a fight.
I don't think our political/leaders had any concept that the Afghan military and politicians, including their damn president, would just immediately say "here you go!" and run from the Taliban.
There was a plan. The plan depended on the Afghans doing... something. Anything. They did nothing, and we were caught unprepared for that.
And here we are.

They trusted us and we (Biden) abandoned them.
May 1st date was not executed. Biden removed special forces backing.

The elephant in the room nobody’s talking about is that apparently Afghanistan has a wealth of untapped mineral resources. That is the real reason why we stuck around for so long. It wasn’t to spread democracy and send little girls to school so they can grow up to be CEOs. It was for the mining rights to what could potentially lie underneath the ground. Make no mistake, China is going to move in & own that area.
