Any lifestyle preferences besides geographical proximity to work?
Either or, budget is 1500. Would prefer to rent.
Old lady coming with me.
We're 50/50 on going out, but don't mind traveling to the city if need be.

Find a job in another state if you can. Don’t waste your time in Louisiana/NOLA

Harahan and Old Metairie
I love the city but it doesn’t make sense to live in it if you’re going to be in elm wood

There’s a large upscale apartment complex at the edge of elmwood along Hickory Ave called Bella Ridge.
There’s a good amount of nurses and young professionals living there. Worth it if you want to be close. If your buying go for Harahan or Old Jefferson

quote:Really good advice, everything in the metro area is pretty much like it was before Katrina. Well, except the pumps. They spent quite a bit on the pumps so they must be even better than before.
Although I haven’t set foot in that place since before Katrina so who knows really.

Company is located in Elmwood, right near HPL Bridge. Looking for decent places to live/rent that aren't complete trash in that area. What should I look for/avoid when it comes to Elmwood/Kenner/Metairie/Harahan. I'd rather not constantly commute, so living close to work would be ideal.
I work in Elmwood, near the HPL (well, I work from home - but still) and my co-workers live all over the city.
Remember that New Orleans metro (and I mean from 310 to 510) is like 15-20 miles wide, and less than that from the lake south. The "livable" part is a smaller circle than that.
Unless you do something really dumb, like move to Chalmette or Algiers or Belle Chase - your commute isn't going to be that bad, especially if you live in the "livable" circle.
If you're semi-local, I recommend driving through the neighborhoods people have recommended and look for For Lease signs. That will also give you a feel for the area and the amenities (stores, bars, restaurants) nearby.
I do recommend picking a neighborhood you THINK you like and rent there first.

I would live Uptown. Look for a spot near Audubon Park, you could get to work in 10-20 minutes depending upon traffic.
It's the best area to live in the New Orleans metro, especially if you don't have kids.
We rented an updated 1br apartment with a balcony Uptown for $1200 and were walking distance from dozens of bars, restaurants, etc... And in that area you are still only 10-15 minutes from downtown (Saints, Pels, etc...).

Why would anyone live in Lakeview? None of the benefits of living in the city with ALL of the negatives of living in the city
Oh FFS Lakeview is fine. Harrison Ave. has plenty of restaurants and a good grocery store. Kids can actually play in front or back yard. You can walk to a restaurant and bar from your house. Almost all houses have the option to park car from the alley in back of house (won't get broken into). Neighbors and neighborhood are great. City Park next door.

I always heard people say they lived in River Ridge but never really knew what area it is. What are the boundaries?

i live uptown now. i miss living in midcity by city park. Plus it was way easier to get in and out of the city imo. Also only have one day of mardi gras to deal with.
But diff strokes for diff folks.

This was the answer when my Dad had this issue in the early 70's. Built in Luling and drove over the Huey P every day for decades to work in Harahan. And back then, the drive really sucked.
I'm assuming you'll find tons of great houses out there now, as the area has boomed for a while.

Not sure anyone has asked, but how much do you want to pay for rent. That could rule out several areas being discussed.

OP said $1500/month. Tight for N.O. especially if he needs more than 2 bed rooms.

Realtors are great for finding a condo or duplex to rent. They’re knowledgeable on who and who not to rent from. Sadly Nola has a ton of slumlords that will rob you blind. Contact a Remax or Reve realtor office in the city to help you out.

The Golden Rectangle in 70115 is where you want to be.

I kinda lived in my Uptown bubble, didn’t leave all that often. We’d ride our bikes downtown or to the Bywater though.

Although this was convenient for partying, it was a pain in the arse too
