o completely dismiss that with a snarky “shanks putt to extend playoff” is both ludicrous and stupid. It completely ignores the fact that he played as well as he did and it’s simply incorrect as it wasn’t a shank. OP clearly knows less about golf than I do
correct, it wasn't a shank.

In golf, a "shank" is a ball hit off the hosel of the club, and putts aren't "shanked."

However, it was a very poor putt that did break and missed on the "low" side of the hole, which is the worst side to miss on. Good golfers prefer to miss on the "high" side of the hole on a breaking put, since the ball still has a chance to go in, depending on how much break occurs based on the speed of the putt.

By the way, I'm a huge Sam Burns fan and he's been in contention this year quite a few times, with one win, and is currently ranked 13th in FedEx Cup points, which is very, very good.

The entire ball was within the the cup and had just a bit too much speed. It could have just as easily gone in rather than lipped out.

Shanked a putt....You’re an idiot.

Yeah, Harris English falling apart brought a bunch of guys back into contention - double bogeys on 2 par 3's and a bogey on an easy par 5 when he had a 4 shot lead. Looks like could be at least a 4 man playoff.

Typical Georgia Bulldog.

Not trying to nitpick but Burns is currently ranked 10th in FedEx Cup Standings, updated after the tournament, not 13th.

If he trimmed that terrible moustache, he would be Top 5 in the world.

Yeah what's up with the stache? I saw him at East Ridge a couple of weeks ago and it was not there. Cam Smith?

If he just bogeys 13, he wins by one. He didn't let that get him down, and what a birdie on 18 to tie. Lipped out the putt to lose, it happens.

Ancer started his putt just outside the hole. Burns did not and that shite was halfway down before lipping out.

What’s up with the terrible headline? Not a shank and didn’t extend playoff but ended playoff by missing.

Shank?? Ha-Ha! OP has definitely no idea about how easy it is to miss a 5-6' right to left putt for a "righty", especially under pressure.

I don't think I've ever been more perturbed at a sports analyst than when an ESPN reporter stated that Tom Watson had "choked" by bogeying 18 in The British Open a few years back - hitting an 8 iron dead online from 180 yds and allowing for at least 50' of rollout and still having the ball trickle over the back edge for a difficult "up and down" is not a "choke". Neither is Sam's "lip out" a "shank" or "choke".

Insofar as the putt is concerned, the golf analysts were all saying the putt from the other side of the hole "should" break right-to-left. Matsayama's putt did not - plus, Sam's previous short putt from the other side of the hole was shorter and a bit more from the lower side of the hole. Ancer's putt and Harris' putt both broke (a lot), and I believe Sam thought it best to ram it in rather than risk playing the putt outside the hole and it not breaking in. He hit a good putt, but in retrospect, should've allowed for slightly more break. Tough lip-out and great courage coming back from the double-bogey. The back 9 played tough, if anyone was paying attention to that. Sam went 2-under, even with that double.

Choker/Shanker?? No way! OP should stick to hopscotch or tiddly-winks - something he maybe knows something about.
