Sean Payton expressed frustration Wednesday night over the fact that New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas did not have ankle surgery until June, though he declined to elaborate on why the procedure was delayed.

Thomas, who was plagued by the injury throughout last season, is expected to miss time at the start of this season, as well.

"Well, look, it appears we're gonna have to spend some time without him. It's disappointing," Payton said during his opening training camp videoconference before the Saints' first practice Thursday. "And we'll work through it with the other players that are here. But the surgery took place, and obviously we would've liked that to happen earlier than later. And quite honestly, it should've."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported in January that Thomas was expected to undergo surgery to repair the torn deltoid and other injured ligaments in his ankle. But it was just revealed last week that Thomas did not have surgery until after he reported for the Saints' mandatory minicamp in June.

"After the season it was decided that he was gonna treat that conservatively. And I think we all had an expectation that [the ankle] would heal and he'd be fine coming into camp this year," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Wednesday. "But we get to the minicamp, and obviously it wasn't quite right. So we had to make the call and collectively made the call to have the surgery in June.

"Obviously with hindsight we would've preferred that surgery to be earlier in February or March. But it wasn't. You know, it is what it is. And hopefully he's had a good result so far, and hopefully we'll get him back sooner rather than later."

Are they going to keep putting up with him? Or is it time to move him?

Mike Thomas has turned into one of the least likable players in the league. Coming from a saints fan too.

He'll be traded to Jacksonville or Detroit probably within 12 to 18 months

MT does not want to be in NO anymore.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

I’m confused about this entire situation. Was the original plan not surgery then when that didn’t work surgery happened in June? Or did MT intentionally wait until June to get it?was there no communication between the sides as to whether he had surgery in the spring? Shouldn’t the team reps and MT be working towards him recovering together?

Sad cause the guy can ball but like many WRs…it can fall apart quick

Y’all pitiful it clearly says that everyone thought it would heal but it didn’t and they made a decision to have the surgery in June in which he did and y’all trying to talk shut about the guy for doing what he was told

Once they get paid they turn to shite and dont care about anything. They play hard to get that contract and when they secure the bag they give zero fricks from that point on. We have all seen it a thousand times.

Maybe I'm reading this incorrectly, but it sounds like Payton wanted the surgery done in January and Loomis and the medical staff opted to wait to see if it'd heal conservatively. They got to minicamp and it wasn't right so they did the surgery in June.

Kind of sounds like Payton and the GM/medical staff aren't on the same page.

I don’t understand why the Saints training staff medical staff doesn’t get 90% of the blame for this.

Like why aren’t they in touch with all injured players weekly if not daily to ensure proper protocol is being followed?

This is on the Saints organization more than it’s on MT in my opinion

Why do it on your time(off season)???

He got hurt at work, so he'll get surgery and rehab while at work.

See no issues with players waiting till the preseason and getting their surgery done.

Why have it done in off season, and ruin your off time in a boot or in bed??? frick the fans and Owner. This is how it works in real world.

Michael Thomas had 149 catches in one season, yet he will not have that total for the remainder of his career.

SAD!!!
