Although Les had some good moments early I always wonder how good that period could have been if a coach that was less stubborn and evolved was hired instead.

Rick Neuheisel was on the list
Houston Nutt was recommended by Saban

No one, Saban fkd us by lying until the last minute....

Look around college football. There aren’t many coaches from the era still coaching and an even smaller amount still doing it at an elite level. The game moves on from everyone not named Saban.

It was Del Rio all the way.
If Bertman waited one more day, JDR was coming to BR. His NFL season was not over and by contract he couldn’t discuss the LSU job in person. Bertman was not happy and sent his staff to get Miles.
Don’t ever think one day doesn’t matter.

Nutt recommended by Saban
Butch Davis, but he wasn't interested at all
Jack Del Rio, Skip went to Jacksonville to interview, but because of contract issues, I think, he wouldn't meet. High risk/reward candidate. Had never coached in college, not even as a grad assistant.
Petrino, had a horrible interview with Skip as they did not mesh at all.
Neuheisel may have been on the list, but I don't remember much.

Around halftime/3rd quarter of the Citrus Bowl, a rumor swept thru the stands that Spurrier was going to be named HC that night.

I will never forget how much I cringed when I found out we had hired Les Miles while I was making my way to my Citrus Bowl Stadium seat. What a bummer. Was hoping for Jack Del Rio but knew that was nixed due to Bertman's impatience the night before.
Also remember Radakovich, Jimbo and Muschamp in a heated discussion about them not being considered/interviewed for the job. That pissed me off because I believe that Muschamp's complaing caused at least an interview for Jimbo who would have been my choice before Les Miles by a longshot.

I remember the rumors of Butch Davis having an in home visit with Perriloux to bring him to LSU. People were excited. Then a few days later we are watching YouTube clips of Miles cringing. Then he shows up in a Britney Spear headset asking where his wife was.

I'm sure there was some mutual smoke with Spurrier, but that was never going to happen because of timing. He had just signed with South Carolina in Nov. A month later was just too late.

Spurrier was hired at USCe a month prior to Saban leaving. I think he said once he would have taken the LSU job if had opened before S Carolina.

Was it any one thing that caused the "cringing."
Were you aware ahead of time what his "concept" of a quarterback is.
That he was a Bo Schembechler wannabe, meaning that the game had already passed him by before he even got to Oklahoma State.
What Bertman foisted on an unwary fanbase.
He never should've been here to begin with.

Urban was hired at Florida that December. No clue if LSU would have been the choice, but it could have been awesome

Miles and his team of Okie Lite had just had their butts handed to them by Ohio State in the Alamo bowl and Bertman hires this buffoon. Although I continued to and will always be a fan of my Alma Mater, I always thought Miles was the wrong choice.

Oh yeah. He takes the LSU job over USCe all day every day. That's one of the great "what ifs" in LSU football. If Saban is honest about his intentions then Spurrier is probably the guy. I don't know how it would've worked out but it would've been fun to watch. I'm sure he would've brought in better QBs.

LSU fans "cringing" at Les Miles is retro-active re-writing history on steroids.
Les was, at minimum, acceptable.. and given the timing was consider a pretty good hire.
Then Les went and kicked arse his first couple years... 10-2 after 10-2 after 10-2 seasons.
LSU fans shite the bed and wrecked Les because LSU fans go fricking over the top with stupid shite like the Riverboat gambler and crazy Les and the "Hat".
Every fricking time. LSU fans have this appetite (pun intended) for trying to take shite extreme and prove to the world we're better than God's gift... it's fricking nauseating. Insecurity syndrome galore.
Put "e a u x" on everything... wooo look how fricking special we are. "Special" is right.
:)
ETA: geaux ahead and downveauxte me and then threauxw some trash out ur window on the way heauxme

Probably could have been the most dominant stretch is school history....

FWIW, here is what Miles looked like at the time (This is an actual post on some board late Dec '04):
quote:
OSU Record since 89
89: 4-7-0
90: 4-7-0
91: 0-10-1
92: 4-6-1
93: 3-8-0
94: 3-7-1
95: 4-8
96: 5-6
97: 8-4
98: 5-6
99: 5-6
00: 3-8
01: 4-7 Miles' first year
02: 8-5
03: 9-4
04: 7-4 sans bowl
OSU losses during the last 3 years:
04: A&M (7-4); OK (12-0); TX (10-1); TT (7-4)
03: NE (10-3); OK (12-2); TX (10-3); MS (10-3)
02: LaTech (4-8); UCLA (8-5); TX (11-2); KSU (11-2); TT (9-5)
I don't think people appreciate what Miles has accomplished at Ok State. Prior to him becoming head coach, OSU only had one winning season since 89. He now has them in their 3rd straight bowl appearance, which had not happened since 83-85 (J. Johnson's last year and the following 2 yrs). In the last 3 years, he has only had one bad loss. That was to La Tech at La Tech and was the first game of the season. A closer examination of the program should reveal whether this success, which is exemplary for OSU, is temporary or set to continue. Until then, he should be viewed as a strong candidate. His Jones for Mich, which is known, can be dealt with up front during negotiations.
