Oh, so you’ve never actually listened to Hunt before. Thanks for confirming that.

Exactly. He's not going to hire someone that is going to clash with his philosophies on hitting.

I don’t mind Hunt, he’s not my favorite but his takes are usually pretty reasonable and he actually talks sports not Star Wars and D&D like some people

Hunt envisions himself as some sort of "baseball savante", which is annoying as shite.

T-Bob called me an expert a couple of weeks ago, and I laughed at him. Just a passionate fan with an opinion. I don't take much I do on air seriously. It's sports. It's fun. I'm glad Guaranty and LSU give me an opportunity to do it.

Can you elaborate on what I said that rubbed you wrong?

I didn’t listen to whatever interview you’re talking about, but it sounds like he’s saying that the volunteer hitting coach (Wanaka) don’t excite him because volunteer hitting assistants have proven to be non-factors in recent LSU history.

We can all stop speculating what he meant, he is literally in this thread telling you what he said and meant.

Anyone who cares, should go listen to what he said. The OP misrepresents it greatly. Basically he said the hire is fine, he just tends to put more stock in recruiting good hitters and thinks its more impactful than coaching up hitters. Agree or disagree, thats basically what he said.

its only who you have hitting and that coaching won't do it.

There's some truth to this.

You get 9 Dylan Crews’s and Tre Morgan’s you don’t even need a coach. Just have someone pull the names out of a hat and put them on a lineup card. You can’t teach great hitting. You can teach someone to hit but the talent and/or work ethic of the player is what makes them great.

Not saying this is true in his case, but sometimes the reason for getting a job isnt a good one. Nepotism is rampant in this state.

Hunt is my favorite radio personality. Maybe he had an off day. But I was also not super excited about the hire because we already had the Arizona HC we didn’t necessarily NEED their associate head coach too.

What capacity would you rather have seen targeted for this position if not hitting? And what candidates would you have identified as the best options for that particular part of the game?

ETA: kudos to you for openly posting here unlike your colleagues who bash us all the time yet insist they don’t read the site lmao

I think Wanaka is a great fit. He has a positive history with Johnson. I'm assuming the original poster was looking for me to call it a program changer or a "home run". I just said it made sense and that I put a little more stock into recruiting than a hitting coach. I totally understand the way Johnson has assembled the staff and am really excited for this era of the program.

As far as other options, I can't pretend to know a ton about baseball assistants across the country. I take a reactive position when hires are announced.

I've always said I spend time on TD. I can weed out the stuff I think is ridiculous. I enjoy most of the discussion and know that when something happens it usually ends up here pretty quickly.

I'll be around.

I think you are the only sports personality that I trust to be totally honest. Your takes are right way more often than not. Your analysis of how to beat bama in football is still the best bit of sports analysis I’ve ever heard. Your eye for baseball is fairly incredible.

I agree that some players are just naturally more talented than others. I do think a good hitting coach can help though. We’ve definitely got two outstanding ones now.

I love the staff. I think the thing im most hopeful for that maybe hasn’t been discussed a lot is improved base running. My god we absolutely kicked ourselves with stupidity on the base paths so many times the last few years.

Do they have to say ‘volunteer’ due to some # of coaches restriction?
