“This project well exceeds the eight figure per episode mark,” Petti says, “so there is a multiplier effect on our economy in terms of its impact. There are hundreds of related businesses benefitting from the plethora of work.”

A budget this large will place the series high up on the list of most expensive television shows ever made, among fellow HBO productions like Game Of Thrones and The Pacific, as well as recent Disney+ series like The Mandalorian. By its eighth season, Game Of Thrones’ budget had moved from $10 million per episode to upwards of $15 million, dropping major bucks on battle scenes and animating those dragons. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks helmed the 2010 miniseries The Pacific for HBO, with a combined budget of $200 million. The series leveled out at $20 million per episode to create the perfect WWII battle scenes.

I'll be shocked if it's good.

These studios are spending some serious money on these shows, there is a bit of an arms race.

For instance, it just came out that Amazon's Wheel of Time adaptation (which already started filming Season 2 yesterday before Season 1 even has an announced release date), the budget is likely over 100 million for 8 episodes, so over 12 million an episode.

That isn't even mentioning their LotR TV show which will easily be the most expensive TV series ever produced.

Expect no more than two seasons, then. Carnivale and Rome know what time it is.

Great idea HBO.

HBO exec “Hey, I know. Let’s make a video game into a tv show and tell the exact same story that players of the game spent between 60-100 hours experiencing, just condensed down to 10 hours. This has never been tried before and nothing can go wrong.”

Will be interesting to see if this turns out to be good or not. I kind of think they fricked up not casting Kaitlyn Dever as Ellie, especially considering she publicly stated she would love to do it. We shall see.

Never played the game. Can someone tell me if it’s another “humans are the real monsters” trope bullshite?

Man, there is so much great source material out there, just imagine what they could bring to screen for 200m.

I like Last of Us fine, but I won't be surprised if this is a dud.

This show is going to be amazing. I can't wait.

Wish The Walking Dead would have made it to HBO

I just want them to get off their asses and make a Half Life series. Then a Portal series. Then tie them together because Valve is too lazy to give us Half Life 3.
