Why wasn't Peleliu and other islands bypassed?

Listing to the latest HCH podcast as I can't help but think why the hell did we even mess with those islands. The japs had no boats to get off of them or aircraft left. Leave a destroyer or two just in case and bypass all that shite, let them starve.

Needed the airfield in IJ.
Also, if you bypassed and left only a destroyer, the Japanese could have flown in planes and supplies.

They could have bypassed more than they did, but Iwo was important as a secondary landing site for B29's and such.
Philippines never should have been invaded but MacArthur needed his headlines.

It is an 8 mile square island, our planes from our carriers and the big guns of the battleships could have easily destroyed any aircraft that the Japanese had on there.
I guess you could say that maybe the US didn't realize how dire straights the Japanese supply issue was so they couldn't have known that there was no way for the islands to be resupplied.

Say it with me: military industrial complex.

Never bypass a fortified enemy position…

It's the Japanese aircraft that are flying that pose the problem. Any ships left behind are vulnerable and the navy is not going to leave a carrier group there for the rest of the war.

OK so Iwo Jima can be taken off the list but the other ones like Pelalui (sp) and tons of others were all not needed.

It was a mistake an has been labeled as such in recent years. Wasn't justified vs the amount of Marines lost.

MacArthur was looking for his cheeseburger in paradise

We needed the airfield ourselves. Not just to remove the japs

You realized at that point in the war, 1945 there was a negligible amount of planes left in the whole theater for the Japanese? And the ones left they didn't have fuel for or trained pilots.

estimate of over 29,000 aircrew saved
Read somewhere that the number of aircrew saved was far larger than the causalities incurred to take the island...
Iwo was a divert field for damaged B-29s

We bypassed lots of islands occupied by the Japanese. At some point you have to take the fight to them.

Don’t know who downvoting this… we screwed ourself plenty of times in WW2 not following this rule… you HAVE to take the fight to the enemy eventually

I don't know if the US commanders knew this information or not. It's easy to look back on history with all of the details and second guess strategy. The Commanders had a plan, and executed that plan. Their biggest fear was having to actually put boots on the ground on mainland Japan. Japanese were fanatical and everyone was willing to die. US estimated 1 million US casualties if they had to invade Japan.

That was the reason they justified. But has since been proven wrong.
quote:
Generations of historians have accepted this explanation. But as marine captain Robert S. Burrell convincingly argues in The Ghosts of Iwo Jima (2006), this justification cannot withstand scrutiny. For one thing, the 2,251 figure was achieved by counting every B-29 landing on Iwo Jima as an emergency landing, despite the fact that of the nearly two thousand landings made during the months of May, June, and July 1945, more than 80 percent were for routine refueling. Several hundred landings were made simply for training purposes, while most of the remainder were for relatively minor engine maintenance. During the month with the largest number of landings—June—not a single one of more than eight hundred B-29s that landed on the island did so due to combat damage.

Kamikazes say what's up. Check out the destruction they caused around Okinawa.

Peleliu was a waste. Not necessary for the Philippines campaign. The Marine Corps still holds a grudge about the carnage that island caused.
The Philippines themselves are a different matter. Not every decision during war is strictly military. Politics do play a part. Besides, unlike other islands, the PI was a possession of the United States prior to Pearl Harbor and were obviously a strategic asset after the war. It made sense to directly take them back to maintain Philippine/American relations in peacetime.
