I’m sure the previous Suicide Squad had something to do with that

They cost themselves a ton of money at the box office releasing it like they did

How do you know how much HBO paid Warner for same-day release on their 2021 slate?

HBO is owned by Warner so I imagine they got a pretty sweet deal

Complete agree. And it's what concerns me about Dune. I think it’s going to bomb as well.

I understand what you’re saying, but I guarantee you there was major accounting involved with that transaction, even if one is under the other’s umbrella.

As far as I know, there’s no way for us to know if they lost money by releasing it as they did.

Yeah, I mean they built the entire financial structure of the industry to ensure that we can never actually figure this out with absolute certainty

I'm not sure if HBO even had to pay anything. WB put it on there the same way Disney had been putting movies on D+.

Maybe, but I doubt it. Creative accounting and tax code shite leads me to believe that there was a transaction, even if it was in-house.

Maybe but there's been zero reports of fees paid by HBO for any of the other movies WB put on HBOMax. Same goes for the movies Paramount put on Paramount+. ScarJos lawsuit also indicates that D+ didn't pay Disney anything for Black Widow.

Why would they report those numbers? Probably makes it really easy to spin a movie’s success or failure.

What a ride. Very fun. Keeps you guessing for sure. Many things to throw shade on for those that thrive on that but it was a cool watch.

That’s pretty similar to my rankings, except I would flip-flop Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey and drop Aquaman down a notch.
I liked Birds of Prey a lot. I would love to see a Batman movie set in that colorful, super violent world. I also think Mary Elizabeth Winstead would have made a good Wonder Woman.

I’m guessing AT&T which owns HBO Max and WB is alright with take some losses on the front end to build up the subscriber base for HBO Max. What they and everyone else should do with their future releases is simple:

1. Give your movies theater exclusivity for the first 31 days. That’s when movies make the bulk of their revenue and the first 4 weeks is when the studios get their higher cut.

2. After that window, do your Premier Access on your apps. For those who want to see it but don’t want to go out to theaters. $20, $30 whatever.

3. 3-4 months after its initial release date, it goes up for free on your respective streamer. Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Peacock are the tie ins for the 3 biggest studios out there that usually do 50-60% of the box office in a given year anyways. I’m interested in what happens with Sony though. It’s currently the biggest studio that doesn’t have a streaming tie in.

This wasn't a money exchange. Hbo is a distribution arm of Warner, just usually for television and licensed releases. Warner decided to put these movies out through that distribution arm.

The camera work and visuals in this movie were fantastic. A few captured it earlier, but I think this is what James Gunn can do without Disney holding him back.

The director should’ve created a gigantic animatronic starfish obviously
