Players who get called up usually spend less time in the minors if they went to college first.

It’s roughly the same amount of time but do you want to spend that time traveling by bus and sharing a two bedroom apartment with 6 dudes and eating top ramen or do you want to spend 3 of those years getting top notch nutritional care while being the big man on campus and playing in front of 10,000 people.

I know what I’m choosing. Barring life changing money in the first round college ball is a much better gig.
It is ridiculously naive to think this is still the choice that top prospects make.

And LSU was one of those places before NIL so why would they now decide playing into front 10K is better than riding the bus in the minors? Signing bonus will trump NIL money for pretty much any draft pick.

Does Vandy take the hit because they lose the advantage of money for scholarships?

Correct. Most of the money is from signing bonus and then they only get paid in season. I still think you have a fair amount leave after junior year though because after your senior year, a team can sign you for next to nothing.

Marucci is the most used bat in the majors...definitely a national brand.

Walk ons seems more regional, but you're right that they have reach.

NIL won’t change the 1st rounders minds. There’s no way it could.

However there is something to be said about it giving something for the 3rd to 5th round guys to think about.

That’s when you get to talking about sub-mil slot money. Now I can’t predict what the NIL market is going to be like and neither can anyone else. But there is room for some negotiation in those numbers. Would you rather make 500k in the minors buying your own meals and paying your own rent or would you rather make 300k over the course of 3 years at college and have to do neither of those things?

I don’t know if the NIL market will pay that much but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like Dylan Crews at LSU could pull down 6 figures a year.

I don’t think so. It’s still an education from Vanderbilt.

Lol no.

If he’s the number one draft pick he MIGHT get 10 mil depending on the slot value that year.

The number one draft pick this year will get somewhere around 8mil

Not even close.

Besides the Pirates, nine other teams have eight-figure bonus pools: the Tigers ($14,253,800), Rangers ($12,641,000), Reds ($11,905,700), Orioles ($11,829,300), Red Sox ($11,359,600), D-backs ($11,271,900), Royals ($10,917,700), Rockies ($10,543,900) and Brewers ($10,063,400). The Astros, who lost their first- and second-round choices for the second straight year as a penalty for sign stealing, have the smallest pool at $2,940,600.

Most people aren't spending 200K in 3 years on food and rent.

College baseball is not a national sport and he'd have no pull outside of this market so unless boosters are just covertly funneling money to him I'd find 6 figures to be very unlikely.

NIL will be worthless for the vast majority of players very soon. It's not going to make much money for their sponsors

I’m not saying that the money is going to be tit for tat I’m saying that it’s possible for it to get close enough to make for some tough decisions.

And maybe it won’t. I don’t know. I’m just like everyone else in that I have no idea what the NIL market is going to look like.

Anyone that is telling you that they do know is lying to you, themselves or both

You quite literally have no idea if that’s true or not. No one does. We’re in a brand new era of college sports right now and you better hope like hell the sponsorship opportunities here can’t be outdone elsewhere.

Marucci, Walk Ons, Tabasco, Canes are some local national brands.

So where are all these sponsors gonna come from?

Let’s say we are trying to keep five players from leaving, and their signing bonuses would average $150,000 each. We would need a sponsor to come up with an additional $750,000 per year. Big deal! LSU has a thousand fans who could do that if they wanted to.

Baseball players aren’t going to make much on NIL. LSU fans cannot get a grasp on this for some reason

Can they make more than other baseball schools? Yea, they will probably have that opportunity.

Will they be making money to compete with pro signing bonuses? Lol not even close

Landon Marceaux is going to be offered $400-500k this summer to go pro. What NIL avenue is going to come close to netting him that

As great of a player as he is, he has almost zero appeal, even locally, to be attractive enough to a company to command that kind of money.

It’s just not going to be there for baseball players.

I have to believe that LSU’s facilities, travel and training/nutrition resources (not to mention the academic benefits and fan support) would be a tempting scenario over low-level minor league life.

But only if the signing bonus isn’t there. A signing bonus for more than a player is likely to make over a career in a “real job” would be hard to pass up.

This is gonna be massive for programs like LSU where the fan base is already so passionate about baseball.
