NEW YORK, July 8 (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) plans to ask U.S. regulators to authorize a booster dose of its COVID-19 vaccine within the next month, the drugmaker's top scientist said on Thursday, based on evidence of greater risk of reinfection six months after inoculation and the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant.

Pfizer Chief Scientific Officer Mikael Dolsten said the recently reported dip in the vaccine's effectiveness in Israel was mostly due to infections in people who had been vaccinated in January or February. The country's health ministry said vaccine effectiveness in preventing both infection and symptomatic disease fell to 64% in June.

"The Pfizer vaccine is highly active against the Delta variant," Dolsten said in an interview. But after six months, he said, "there likely is the risk of reinfection as antibodies, as predicted, wane."

Pfizer did not release the full set of Israeli data on Thursday, but said it would be published soon.

"It's a small data set, but I think the trend is accurate: six months out, given that Delta is the most contagious variant we have seen, it can cause infections and mild disease," Dolsten said.

Pfizer's own data from the United States showed an erosion of the vaccine efficacy to the mid-80s after six months, Dolsten said, against the variants that were circulating there in the spring.

He stressed that data from Israel and Britain suggests that even with waning antibody levels, the vaccine remains around 95% effective against severe disease.

Would be glad to take a booster if it further protects me, don't see a problem.

Can't get paid for the projected shots Republicans refuse to get, so back to the well with Democrats.

Couldn't hurt, I would. No one in my family had any issues after getting the Pfizer vaccine, arm was sore for about a day thats it.

I’ve had the first two and will probably get the third if offered. Don’t see any issues nor do I care what others might think of that decision.

Serious answer: you have some immunity already, but one shot of Pfizer or Moderna will give you much stronger immunity, even stronger than those who did not have COVID and just got their two shots.

You absolutely do not need two shots. That's just a waste

In reality, a third shot is likely only going to be recommended for those over 75 years old or so.

Elderly people have weaker immune systems, and their immunity from vaccination wears off much faster. They also are much more at risk from COVID, so a booster probably makes sense.

For the rest of us, all the evidence is that our two shots produces long-lasting neutralizing antibodies.

Meh. Pretty much been known sometype of annual/semi annual shot would happen kinda like the flu shot. Don't see this as a shocker or anything that wasn't expected

Gonna be a shiteshow during flu shot season along with people getting their initial Covid vaccines and then others wanting their Covid booster as well.

Multiple boosters per year, this seems sustainable.
