I have rats running along my wooden fence. If I put out rat poison will it kill the squirrels in my back yard. Thanks not sure how to kill them.

It will. Use caution if you have dogs or neighbors with dogs.

Rat poison will work and will also kill any domestic pet or wild animal that eats the rat poisoned squirrel, so highly not recommended.
You could try a Squirrelinator cage on Amazon or buy directly from the manufacturer. Based on the feedback they work pretty well.

I’ve got rats too, and my dogs aren’t quick enough to catch them. Snap trapped a few, but they’ve wised up. Wondering about the bucket contraptions with the trap door lids. I know the SOB’s are climbing everywhere on my patio at night

Squirrels are rats with fluffy tails. Change my mind.

Put some rat snap traps on the fence at night…
Remove them in morning
Or you can get different size live traps… small one will catch the rats at night and squirrels probably will not go in or if the trap door falls it will fall on their backside it will not trap them…I do this but I trap the squirrels (with bigger live traps) also as they damage my property..
The rat snap trap will kill birds if you do not get them up before morning as birds will go after the bait. (Peanut in my case).. I killed two finches by accident…:(

Gammo air whisper… but not sure you want to be picking them off on top of your fence if in neighborhood…

Works great. I’ve prevented a few dozen squirrels from tearing up my garden this year with that thing. Baited with the dry corn cobs they sell at Lowe’s.
If you are home, air rifle is the more fun way.

Get a rat terrier or a jack russell.
ETA: I'm reading your OP as you want to kill the rats and not the squirrels. Several seem to think you are looking to kill the squirrels.

Did this after hours for a week and picked off two or three a night.

Squirrels are more picky than rats on what they will eat. I've trapped them, but not had any luck with them eating the poison.

Why? They're essentially harmless.

Not mean at all unless threatened.

Possums are they garbage men of the animal kingdom…they are good to have around and eat other pest … only problem is if they try to get in your attic…garage etc…i trap them also and relocate them…my neighbors liked the squirrels and possums…I said fine ..I will stop relocating them when they sign a contract to stay out of my attic and stop chewing stuff…

Agreed

These terms are absurd to an opossum

I’d hate to kill an owl because it ate a poisoned rodent.
