10+ year old Trane unit compressor died last night and the first group that came out let me know we would need to scrap the unit. Is this correct?

1st quote came back $11,000 for 4 ton 16 Seer system... Rest of quotes 8k
Remove existing system and install Rheem 4 ton 16 SEER heating and cooling system. Includes condenser, gas furnace, evaporator coil, drain pan, two float switches, and condenser surge protector. I like the owner and they seem very legitimate however this pricing was more than I was expecting.

Need to get it down quick due to a newborn in the home Anyone have any recommendations?

God damn. Why replace everything?

Can’t replace just the condensing unit?

I will be honest, I know little about HVAC and trying to do some basic research now. I dont see myself owning this home more than 1-2 more years so not looking to break the bank but also dont want a shite product.

Trying to get others to come quote on a holiday weekend has been difficult

I had two condensing units replaced last year along with the evaporating coils in the attic on each unit (to go from R-22 to R-410a). We went with Goodman units (which get a bad rap), but it was less than $10k for all of that.

We had the same size and rated unit installed in March with all new duct work as well and it was $14k. We also got a 10 year warranty and 5 years of service included. I thought it was high but my wife had dealt with the company before and she pulled the trigger. We probably could’ve gotten it cheaper but the 2 stage system is really nice.

I recently had two complete systems replaced in my house. American Standard 15 SEER, 3.5 ton and 2.5 ton. It cost me $13,592. Only thing not replaced was duct work.

Did you get at least one other HVAC company to confirm you have a dead compressor and not a mis diagnosis - it happens more than you think.

If the compressor is dead and the unit is 10 years old, then a total system replacement would be the best investment. If you plan to move in 2 to 5 years go with a less expensive 14 SEER unit. The prices quoted are legit - I was quoted $10,900;for a 4 ton 16 SEER single stage Trane 3 years ago. Other major brands that are good seem to come in cheaper. But I suspect it will be difficult for you to get much below $8K for a 4-ton unit. Rheem/Rudd is a good manufacturer.

Go get a window unit to keep that baby and mama cool.

Then get a second and third quote!

What's the cost for compressor replacement only?

We had our unit replaced in February of this year. Honestly, think I paid too much but I got a few quotes and picked the company that impressed bull$h//ed) me the most. I paid a little over $13k for a 17 seer 5 ton 2 stage Rheem, some minors ductwork repairs, and an additional return installed, media cabinet, and UV lighting in the handler. Everything around the unit in the attic was replaced, pan, piping, switches. They were all around the same price range for what I got.

Thanks everyone staying with the in-laws, got a few more quotes all around 8k. Compressor is rigged up to work short term and cool the house to give us time to decide.

Compressor didn’t die if it’s “rigged up” and cooling.

Get other companies to diagnose the problem before getting quotes.

Craw, could this be as simple as a capacitor problem?
