Mississippi made a big commitment to literacy. Kids cannot advance past 5th grade without being able to read well. Studies showed that poor reading skills were one of the biggest factors for why children often became discouraged, disillusioned, disinterested, and disruptive in school by 8th grade. Many teachers can attest that while there’s not a big difference in public vs private primary school kids, a lot of public school kids change drastically by 8th grade.

By addressing that the root cause was an inability to read, causing them to end up being left behind in their other classes, Mississippi managed to significantly reduce dropouts and improve both performance and behavior.

Excellent take. Louisiana did make some strides in literacy this session with a pilot program, but it needs funding.

Instead we gave out another teacher pay raise.

That is seriously very impressive. I think the other thing schools can do is ensure that kids make it to school every day. Maryland had a system where staff called every home when a kid was absent and they found out why. Increased attendance and reduced problems significantly.

Well, they have to be retained in third grade one year unless they have a Good Cause Exemption.
