The wife drives a 2017 Yukon xl and it currently has about 80K miles on it. Runs fine, but the dealer/oil change place is telling me that we need to service the transmission. Question is, do you do the "flush" as recommended by the dealer or drop the pan, clean the filter and refill as recommended by the mechanic shop. Thanks for the info...

I also get rid of them around 100K miles

Hard to believe that you have a GM 8sp trans that hasn’t been serviced by 80k miles!

They are notorious for torque converter shudder, and are usually flushed, and different formulation ATF filled by 60k miles…

I’ve always been told don’t service it unless there is a problem.

Drove my 2014 GMC 225k miles without ever servicing the transmission and it still shifted fine when I traded it

Check with your dealer, my Dad just had his transmission flushed with the new Mobil 1 Transmission fluid (I think that was the brand)in his 8spd and they did this at their cost because of the issues they had with the previous fluid used.

Do not 'flush'. Simply
quote:

drop the pan, replace the filter and refill as recommended
In the case of the 8sp, recommended fluid may not be what was originally in it. Check the latest info of what to fill it back up with.

If you are curious, monitor trans temp. It can sometimes indicate if there is trouble brewing.

Drain if you want..

No flush. Most places pull a vaccuum and they frick it all up.

Better to do two flushes about 6 months apart if you want to get most of the fluid out

My wife’s 2019 Colorado shudders something aweful has 59k miles on it. My truck a 2012 f250 diesel has 171k miles and the tranny had never been touched

I would follow the maintenance schedule not what the dealer says. My wife's friend was getting her new Honda flushed every 6 months from the day she bought it. Insane.

well according to the manufacturer recommended maintenance schedule, you should change ATF and filter every 45,000 miles Guess we will have it done.

Agreed. A flush is the easiest way to open up pandora's box when it comes to transmissions.

This. LINK Filter is replaced not cleaned.

Last paragraph in linked article.

“ GM states their transmissions are NOT to be flushed

In the technical service bulletin 04-06-01-029E, GM warns dealerships against several flushing procedures. In regard to transmissions, GM has issued the following statement:

"The use of external transmission fluid exchange or flush machines is NOT recommended for the automatic or manual transmission. Use of external machines to replace the fluid may affect the operation or durability of the transmission. Transmission fluid should only be replaced by draining and refilling following directions in SI. Refer to Automatic/Manual Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement." “
