Washington Spirit and Japan forward Kumi Yokoyama came out as a transgender man in a video posted to Yuki Nagasato's YouTube channel on Sunday.
Yokoyama said they were encouraged to tell their story after living in the United States and Germany.
The 28-year-old, who played for Japan in the 2019 World Cup, said they had undergone top surgery when they were 20 and added they would have further surgeries when they retired from playing.
"I've dated several women over the years but I had to stay closeted in Japan," Yokoyama, who uses they/them pronouns, said in the 18-minute interview. "In Japan I'd always be asked if I had a boyfriend, but here [in the United States] I'm asked if I have a boyfriend or girlfriend.
"When my girlfriend said there was no reason for me to stay closeted, it really hit me. Coming out wasn't something I was enthusiastic about, but if I think about my life going forward, it would be harder to live closeted, so I found the courage to come out."
They said that seeing Canada and OL Reign midfielder Quinn tell their story and wear a "Protect Trans Kids" sweatshirt before a game also encouraged them to speak out.
"[Quinn] wore a [sweatshirt] that said 'Protect Trans Kids' before a game, and I realised that it was what taking action looks like," Yokoyama said. "To be able to accept people you have no relationship with, that's the kind of person I would like to become and I hope we can create that society."
Quinn announced in September that they are transgender in an Instagram post and elaborated on their experience in a post on OL Reign's website.
"I don't think there's ever a right moment to do something like this," Quinn wrote. "I understood that there was going to be backlash. It's taken me awhile, having a trans identity, to be able to deal with the amount of backlash that I receive in my daily life. To see the microaggressions and the signals and messages.
"Whether it's going to the washroom and being approached or yelled at, or whatever else, it's taken some time for me to grow a shell of being able to handle it. I've wanted to speak out for a long time and be a voice and use my platform, but at the same time I did have some fear of what that potential backlash would do and how big a toll it would be for me."
The Spirit also tweeted their support for Yokoyama.
"We support and are so proud of you Kumi," the team said. "Thank you for showing the world it's ok to embrace who you are!"

Is that a man's name or woman's name?

Is he still allowed to play women's soccer?

So Kumi is no longer in the National WOMEN'S Soccer League, right? Aren't you however you identify, full stop?

The 27-year-old said they had top surgery to remove breast tissue seven years ago without hormonal treatments, as taking hormones would have put them at risk of failing doping tests. Yokoyama said they are planning to undergo more gender-affirming procedures once they retire.
Was a woman, now a man
Played for Japans National team
Had her breast tissue removed but isn't taking hormones until playing career is over. So right now just a flat-chested female playing soccer who says she is a man. Doesn't wanna mess up her income

OK...so let me get this straight.
Being a transman means she's a biological female who thinks she's a man. She had "top surgery" which means she had a double mastectomy. Also, I'm told by activists that a "transwoman IS a Woman," and it's why a guy who thinks he's a woman ought to be able to compete against biological women.
So...in this case, since this person thinks she's a man...and thinking you're a man MAKES you one, does this not mean that in order to continue her career she needs to go make a male soccer team? I ask because she says right there that she will not have the full bottom surgery until after she retires, which seems to indicate that she plans on playing against women as what activists would consider a full fledged man.
This is what ignoring crazy gets you...

Real question:
How can someone communicate that they’re transgender if they only use they/them pronouns? “Trans” indicates transitioning from one gender to the next, but this story is confusing because they’re “coming out” without actually revealing which direction they went.

The whole “they” / “them” thing is confusing as hell. I had to read the first couple of paragraphs several times, thinking I was missing something, before I realized the author was playing the idiotic pronoun game.

This is some Tropic Thunder type mind-bending.
