Do you have a living will? (Different than your standard will related to your death)

Had my neighbor telling me how important it is to have one. He was relentless.

And no, he wasn’t selling anything.

I had always thought it was a simple document that said whether or not you want to be kept alive if you are going to be a vegetable and eating food through a straw for the rest of your life.

No, I figure who cares if I’m dead….because I’m dead.

Wouldn’t you just leave whatever you have to your wife and kids? Or your parents? That’s pretty much automatic unless you hate one or the other

Oh nevermind. You said living will.

Well yeah I guess that is something between you and your spouse and/or parents.

Just pull the plug on me. I don’t wanna be a burden on anyone

Yes, realized the importance of a plan already being laid out to make it easier on your family

Louisiana has a specific form this needs to be in to be valid and to be honored.

I used to work with a woman who had a heart attack at a young age and was in a coma. She didn't have a living will or advanced directive and the hospital put a lot of pressure on her parents to pull the plug and donate her organs. They were very religious and didn't want to do it but the docs gave them the "Jesus has her in a headlock and he ain't lettin' go" speech.

Then she woke up and made a full recovery. Oops.

That made me re-think things a bit. Of course I got most of that information from her and she was always a bit crazy, so who knows.

It is a simple document that defines your wishes
It’s best to have one & let your family know your wishes that way there is no questions / arguments during a trying time

I don’t have one but my parents do
I’m single, no kids do my parents know what I want

It’s best to define everything clearly
When my Grandpa had pneumonia we had to decide if he would go on a vent if needed, it would have not necessarily been a life saving measure but would help him get better quicker
He said no & he was released in a couple of days

I signed one saying I wanted the decision left up to my parents. I was also married at the time but the Terri Schiavo case changed my thinking.

Do you mean Advance Directive ? or is that the same thing. If you mean making the decision "Do not keep me on life support, let me die and not suffer" then yes, it is very important, especially if you have a wife and children. Having thoses decisions made ahead of time alleviates emotional stress on your loved ones. They will be upset and worried already, they don't need the extra burden of making life or death medical decisions on your behalf.

If I’m brain dead pull the plug

If I can’t reasonably live a normal life and need constant 24 hr supervision to do basic life functions( shower, wipe my arse, cook, eat, throw shite at TV when LSU or saints frick up) then pull the plug

Contact a hospice organization and ask if you can get one of the Five Wishes booklets.

Hospitals ask you for living will when you undergo surgery.

It’s definitely important so that you can set a limit on how much of your life insurance money your wife can spend with her new husband in Cancun 6 months after your death.

Yes, I've had a living will and a contingent power of attorney filled out since I was like 26. If something happens to you, and you're unconscious in the hospital for a prolonged period of time or even permanently not having these documents filled out makes a difficult situation more difficult for your family. Everyone should have these documents completed.

I do.

Didn’t want to be on a machine or on tube feedings needing round the clock care

That’s not “living” to me and was very clear to my parents to let me go .

Yes I do. I don’t want anyone to have the stress of making decisions concerning me. It’s all laid out. All they have to do is follow the instructions

**Not Legal Advice**

Louisiana Olographic WIll formalities

These are incredibly easy to make, just follow the steps above in your own handwriting and sign in your own handwriting, among other things. If you wanna be extra safe have someone watch and tell them where it is they could find it in the event something bad happened (God forbid), but a notarial will is the smarter choice.
