I remember this case but didn't follow it closely back then. HLN (channel 788 Charter) is showing the case right now so I thought it would be interesting to watch. Well, I don't remember that initially they were looking for a white male in a white truck. The reason they did this is because the FBI put out this profile to the public. However, a local police department identified D. Todd Lee (a black male) but it was widely ignored by the Task Force due to the FBI input. Looking back it seems the FBI screws up alot. WTH? Anyone remember this?

White guy in my town that drove a white truck was pulled over and brought in for questioning because he fit the profile. Poor dude wouldn’t harm a fly.

IIRC, it was a Zachary detective that tried to tell the task force about Lee but they told him to frick off because Lee was black.

I didn't post this b/c of the current racial tensions being stoked given this was 20 years ago. I posted it b/c I can't believe the FBI got it wrong. And then to just dismiss the local officials, who by all arguments know their own communities best, seems arrogant.

I just watched this as well.

I am curious about the way they presented the dissent about the information Zachary Detectives had suspecting DTL by the task force ran by the Baton Rouge Police.

They clearly didn’t have a suspect when the information was presented to them. Were the Investigators really that obtuse to ignore all of the circumstantial evidence pointing to DTL over a single statement from an over night trucker?

This case happened while I was in college at LSU and only a few years before I became a cop, but from what little I have heard there was a lot of pressure and jockeying among the task force to get the credit for solving this case. Hate to think that the hubris of some delayed the arrest and led to the violent deaths of more women.

Close but no. A DNA sample was obtained from a potential victim in Breaux Bridge. Arthur Boyd, detective for St. Martin SO sent that sample to the lab. That sample was run over the weekend and the result was obtained and matched early the next week. SMSO wanted to go get him and the FBI told them to stand down.

FBI went and arrested Lee near Atlanta, where he had attempted to flee the state.

Ole boy was arrested and charged for a frickin machete attack at the cemetery in Zachary there across the street from old Sammy's. Just for no goos reason. And that was several years before he began in earnest. The two young lovers making out would've been hacked to pieces if it weren't for divine intervention in that a police patrol car pulled up just after that monster began that devilish attack. He served time and was released.

I was in law school at the time of the bigger portion of the story, living in Zachary with my young wife no pics who fit the profile of other victims pretty closely, less and except the black young lady. Ravenwood subdivision, right next to that cemetery.

Yeah I remember this. My friend had to give a DNA sample because an ex girlfriend called the line about him out of spite.

The worst part of this story...aside from his killing of white women...was the amount of money spent keeping this worthless POS alive toward the end.

I don't care what color you are, if you are on death row and dying of "natural" causes, let the bastard die.

I can. The FBI is a corrupt politically motivated organization.

Was it the old “serial killers rarely kill outside their own race” theory? That gets said 100x in every serial killer FBI show.

What’s sad is today they would have just tested the DNA right away and gotten a racial profile. They apparently had to hire a contractor to do it.

Have you ever considered using punctuation? It's interesting stuff but my god you need to up your writing game.

Close but no. There was a woman who came to the police and told them it was DTL. I can’t remember how she knew him. Of course either the police or FBI dismissed her.

Regardless, the authorities also did some hypnosis interviews of one witness who saw DTL driving on I-10, and they eventually believed him when he told them he saw a black driver and a woman slumped in the truck.

Probably after the ZPD’s input you mentioned, the evidence became overwhelming, they changed course and finally did approach DTL and got a DNA sample from him. Then he skipped town right after that saliva test.

All that stupidity most definitely cost the life of Carrie Yoder and probably that poor girl who was visitng her mom at the cemetery.

The real kicker was that the police didn’t want to give the cash reward to the original informant who gave the tip it was DTL. Yet the chief of police wanted to write a book about the case and make money about a criminal he didn’t even catch!

I was so livid, I wrote a letter to the Advocate calling out the BRPD for not giving the reward to the woman which they published.

I had to care for DTL in the cath lab for his Defibrillator placement. This was when we first started doing them and they were super expensive. He was a scary Mofo and He had 4 officers with him at all times. Pissed me off cause we paid for that to keep him alive on death row. Karma is a bitch and he died in prison not long after.

If it's not a perfect mixture of grammar, colloquialism and humor, it was damn close. Maybe give it another read. I can't begin to imagine what you're even referring to. If it's the "no pics" part, don't worry, I'm not mad (humor), but you just didn't pick up on the obvious facetiousness. It's like a subliminal message on a longstanding joke on TD and OT, in particular. I know you know this, which ia why it's a bit surprising.

You're probably a completely cool person, but that should've been a "type it out, think about it, delete" situation.
