EDEN, N.C. (AP) — Three people are dead and two remain missing after a group floating down a river on inflatable tubes went over a dam in North Carolina, authorities said.
Rockingham County Emergency Services Director Rodney Cates told reporters Thursday that a group of nine people tubing on the Dan River went over the Duke Energy dam in Eden around sunset on Wednesday. A Duke Energy employee who saw some of the tubers called the situation in to 911 Thursday afternoon, Cates said.

He said it’s not unusual for people to float the river on tubes or rafts in the area, but most get out and walk around the dam, which is marked by signs. The dam is approximately 8 feet (2.5 meters) tall, he said.

Seems pretty easy to survive from that height

Wtf is on the bottom of that dam if it’s only an 8 foot drop

Depends on what is at the bottom, I guess?

I’m guessing the river was really high and they got stuck under it with the current, still not sure how that happens though

A few parts of this story are confusing. Thus, the gif.

The undertow at bottom of dam caused then to not be able to surface if pulled them in. It either will spit them out to late or they are still stuck under dam held by water swirl.

Sure, if it’s just a straight up fall into water.
But over a dam it’s likely not. As others have said you’re likely to get sucked under.

From your article, I'm guessing this is what happened to the tubers:
quote:
The dam area is called a 'drowning machine' because it's a low-head dam; when water spills over the top of the dam, it creates a recirculating current underneath the water. Some likened it to a washing machine.
Swimmers can get trapped in the current if they get too close and the current will keep pushing them underwater, causing them to drown.
