Sinclair wants $23 a month for Bally Sports North direct to consumer app

Sinclair is reportedly telling investors it would charge users $23 a month for the standalone app — a relatively hefty price for just one channel, but a fee that might be worth it for someone who really only wants to watch local sports programming, which in our market includes virtually every Twins, Wild and Wolves game in addition to Minnesota United, Lynx and other offerings.
The aim, per the report, is to have the app ready in time for the start of the 2022 MLB season — which presumably would leave NHL, MLS, WNBA, NBA and MLB fans with streaming services or Dish in limbo for close to another full year.

Can’t wait to pay $200+ a month for all the streaming services I need. We should have stuck with cable

I can't even imagine what ESPN will eventually try and charge when they finally give cable the finger. They must have a back room deal with Cable. Once ESPN goes Cable is basically on life support.
ESPNs stock seems like it's falling though. They really should have done this about 5 or so years ago.

Maybe Sinclair can do some must-carry editorials on their local newscasts calling people who hate their business plan a bunch of cucks who hate Capitalism.

I have bitched about DFW blackouts this season on numerous occasions, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay $276(+fees) a year to watch regional sports on a shitty alt network.
These clowns are off their asses if they think the frickin' pandemic hasn't proved to a lot of avid sports fans they can get by without watching every game, particularly in these 80+ game regular season sports. The more they screw around with playoff formats every year that water down the regular season just makes it even easier.
How bout blow me, and I'll give you $23 to clean it up afterwards Sinclair.

LOL
ESPN has to have cable/dish
No one is giving them a lot for their crap. People want Disney+, not ESPN+. ESPN is a package deal, because they can't get it bought by itself.
People buying Disney+ w/ ESPN+ discounted for a x price.
NO ONE wants to pay for ESPN at disney+ price.

I'm perfectly ok with sports and cable killing themselves
They should have come up with a business model the consumer wanted

The streaming for soccer is out of control. Peacock, ESPN+, Paramount +

Sinclair can burn to the ground and I'd be there to cheer it on the blaze

Sinclair took on billions worth of debt to buy the 21 regional channels a couple of years ago, which seemed like a good deal at the time but things don't seem to be working out like they planned with the pandemic and the channels being dropped from packages, plus they owe $1.8 billion in rights fees this year.
Now they are trying to raise $250 million to set up their streaming service. So yeah, sounds like their nuts are in a vice.

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. If ESPN ceased airing live sports on cable, their subscription demands would skyrocket.

The MLB blackout rules is what’s ridiculous here. Not the $23/month.

quote:I’ve been saying this for years. With cable you pay like less than $1 per channel. Some channels are like 10 cents. The most expensive channel was ESPN at like $5. These networks make money based on volume. 10 cents per cable package per month adds up when you’re in 100 million households.
Can’t wait to pay $200+ a month for all the streaming services I need. We should have stuck with cable
When people cut the cord, these channels lose money though cable. What they lose in volume they’ll try to make up by charging the cord cutters more for their stand-alone channel.
So eventually what you get over time is instead of paying $200 for a gazillion cable channels, you’re paying $200 for a handful of your favorite channels and a streaming service. You’ll end up paying at least the same, but you’ll be getting less.

I haven't been able to watch the Braves all year being a Sling guy. I have the sports package, and just watch what MLB tv has. Can't say I miss it, and won't spend $23 to watch them lose in the first round, either.

They were to busy trying to make the ESPN cell phone a thing & running off their 2 podcast creators (Simmons & Lebatard) who licensed their podcast rights for $300 million combined to other businesses.

quote:Streaming was a great alternative when there were only a few services with a lot of content. Now that every shitty network thinks they are good enough to have their own service, you either get less content or have to pay more money. It’s ridiculous.

If Sinclair is gonna try and do that, then leagues/teams need to get rid of blackout rules
