Breaking: Hong Kong's Victoria Park empty for first time in 32 years on Tiananmen anniversary as police cordon off venue -- @AFP

Powerful combo picture has just hit the @AFP wire.

Shows Tiananmen anniversary vigils in Hong Kong's Victoria Park in 1990, 1999, 2004, 2011, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020 and... tonight

Just horrific. Hong Kong is my favorite city in the world, and we utterly failed them. It’s a memorial and celebration to freedom and capitalism, and now we’ve allowed them to fall in the hands of tyranny. Both Americans and Brits should be ashamed for allowing this to happen.

Yes our “leaders” allowed freedom to die in Hong Kong and it’s beyond incomprehensible.
But knowing Biden and dozens of high ranking Bureaucrats are sleeping with Chyna it’s not surprising.

None of you actually think we’re going to stop China from ruling this world, do you?

It all depends on Taiwan. We will let it go and that’ll be the final mail in the coffin.

It's no accident CCP dropped the hammer almost as soon as Trump was out of office.

Taiwan must be shitting bricks.

I know I wouldn't be counting on the USA under this administration.

We failed the people of Hong Kong by not offering them citizenship here. I'm pretty sure the Brits offered them asylum at least. There wasn't much more to be done about it without starting a world war and us offering them citizenship would have pushed us toward that war also.

It wasn't a secret that this was going to happen. The lease was for 100 years and the Brits gave it back when it was up. The people of Hong Kong were fools if they believed China wouldn't crack down on freedoms once they got it back.

How did WE fail them?

* I see a couple of snowflakes chose not to answer my question.
HK wasn’t our territory.

We didn’t allow it. We have actively aided the Chinese.

"We" didn't fail jack shite. Stop right there.

I was IN Hong Kong in the late 80's. Twice. And both times, they were eagerly ramping up for the 1997 turnover. There was what we would now call a Meme concerning a Chinaman in a traditional straw hat painting over the Union Jack with the flag of Communist China. The talk was all over about how they just couldn't wait to get the GwaiLo out and reunite with the motherland.

Well, they got it.

And now they've discovered that what made HK so unique (and such a nice place to live and work) was British rule. Everyone that wasn't a flat out idiot knew that Beijing was never really going to honor "one country, two systems".

Honk Kong will continue to be squeezed, and the financial institutions will eventually be removed to Shanghai, the preferred financial center of the Chinese government.

They wanted the full embrace of China? They got it. And everything that comes with it. Hong Kong should be left to its fate. "You asked for this. Now YOU deal with the consequences".

Great example of why we shouldn't trust academics to shape foreign policy.

It was and remains none of our business.

This idea that we "failed" Hong Kong is preposterous. I guess you think we "failed" Cambodia and let the Khmer Rouge run rough shod too?

Britain is a third rate insignificant power. It can't do anything about Hong Kong. The Chinese could wipe out Britain in an afternoon. The Royal Navy isn't capable of taking on the Iranians, much less the best Navy in the world.

America's responsibility is to its own citizens, not to people on the other side of the world. We have too many problems here to give a shite about what rights and freedoms people have in a city that has never been a part of the United States.

Wrong. We bear zero responsibility for anything that has ever happened in Hong Kong.

GTFO with trying to make that our responsibility somehow.
